Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Question about possible bad fuel

This morning I noticed my fuel guage was reading about 5 lbs at idle and would go to 0 at moderate throttle. It is the electric sender type and normally reads about 14-15 at idle and never below 7 at WOT.



Just for a test, I turned the engine off and bumped the starter so the lift pump would run for 30 seconds. It did, it sounded normal and the pressure was about 14-15 lbs as I expected. I'm down to about 1/4 tank of fuel on a full fill a few days ago.



Sooooooooooo is this the symptoms of a dirty fuel filter? The filter has about 5000 miles on it. The truck has about 23,000 miles.



The pump sounds ok, not like the sick one I had on my 2000.

So my guess is maybe fuel filter, then maybe a bad guage sender and last the lift pump.



Any opinions appreciated.

Your diagnosis is right on and a filter will probably fix it.
