Question about SC PA...

Hey ya'll, I'm thinking about moving to the Harrisburg area, from Tennessee, sometime near the end of the year, after the Fiance finishes college and I have a couple of questions for some of you guys. She wants to open a farm for horses, training, boarding, riding, stuff like that. Do any of you all know what all it would involve, as far as taxes on land, horses, etc. ? Is the area good for that kind of stuff? I traveled up and down I-81 last week going to see my daughter in VT and I noticed that once you get north of Harrisburg, it gets real hilly, so I probably won't go much north of that, plus I was thinking about moving there a couple of years ago and liked the area, took the girls to Hershey Park and they had a ball!!! If any of you all could help me out with some advice, it would be greatly appreciated. I told her that I would start doing some research about the area. If any of you have some website that might help out also, that would be good. Thanks in advance!!!

Shay,

I live south of Harrisburg (actually south of York) almost into MD. From York on down into MD is horse country. MD is extremely expensive and many people are moving into PA to escape the high real estate costs. This area seems to be more reasonable than say the Philadelphia area (moved from there 2 years ago) and definitely better than MD. I can't help you with any details, but my sister-in-law does well with horses in NE PA. Some townships are experiencing explosive growth right now, while others like mine restricted land use back in the 70's. Lots of opportunities for people to ride with a lot of County/State parks and trails in York county.

Let me know if you get back up in the area again or if you have any other questions I could answer.

Chip

P. S. In case you're searching for info on the area, this area is more known as Central/South Central PA. SE PA would be Philadelphia and suburbs.

the york/hershey area is very nice, but on the more expensive side (compared to SW PA) but why would you leave TN to come here... I loved it in TN... . :-laf

Trust me, I love Tennessee also!!! Oo. Long story short-- both my daughters live up north, one in VA and the other in VT, so it would be easier for me to see them if I lived up there too, plus, from driving through PA the many times that I have, it is beautiful also!!!!! Thanks for the info, if you think of anything else, please let me know.

I currently live about 30 min north of Harrisburg in Snyder county, it is a really nice area, but if you are intersted in horses I would have to say that you should really think about the Lancaster county Area. Lancaster County has a lot of farms and alot of horse people. I think the horse boarding idea would do very well down there. But the only draw back to lancaster county is it is getting very expensive to live down there, that is why I moved back up north.

Chester, berks and Lancaster counties are definitely starting to get out of hand on property values, HOWEVER, Northern Berks (above Reading, and closer to 81 where it runs through Schuykill county) does still have some reasonably priced small farms for sale. If you PM me your address I can try to send ya some of the real estate books for around here.

(live east of Harrisburg in Berks county, but I work right in Harrisburg)

I live in Shippensburg PA and I like it here pretty good. I growed up in KY and moved here 8 years ago. I did live at first in Huntigdon co. then moved down here I liked it up there but moved down here for the sake of my business. Land sure is more higher here tho. Give me a shout when your passing thru I only live three mile off I-81 at the 24 exit.

Thanks for the invite, I have been doing what research I can via internet here on land and other stuff, kinda limited though. I haven't been able to do a lot of it about farms or something with good acreage. I'll keep looking and we'll see what develops. Any of you guys know anything about horse farms in the area, I've heard that they have to pay property taxes on each horse, is this true?? Doesn't make any sense to me... Thanks again to you all!!!

taxes on each horse?

I have a buddy that has a ton of horses and I've never heard of that... but I am on the other side of the state, I'm on the SW side of PA...

I live in Burks county do not know much about land for horses but I am planning on leaving PA as soon as I can and go back to Wyoming. The wife is from just out side of Philly so she is use to the taxes here. We had a house built in Amity Township and are paying over $8k in property taxes to the schoold disctrict not sure how much state income taxes we pay and then we pay alomost $2K to the county and township in property taxes then another 1K on my income to the county. I whent to Baghdad, Iraq in 04 to pay my property taxes so I would not lose our house.
