Is there any advantage to removing the silencer ring from turbo? I have heard some folks say that you can hear the whine of the turbo better. Some say it is too loud.

Could removing this ring damage or strain anything?

I can't hear the turbo at all [from the engine area]. I'm looking to maybe increase the sound if it will react to the throttle responce.

This will be my cheap way to tell me how much boost I am pushing.

Anyone help with these questions???

thanks

wont hurt a thing.

I noticed a small low end power decrease. Its easy to remove. Turbo noise is louder.

Say Don, do you know if the sound is responsive with the throttle?

Does it get louder with more throttle and quietier when let off?

well kinda... ... the turbo spool up is louder and the deceleration is louder as well. Mine is loudest around 2000 rpm when I just let the throttle up and when I am cruisin down the road and kinda give it throttle.

Remove your air filter box and the hose that connects to the turbo. Take a small screwdriver and gently remove the snap ring that hold the silencer ring in place. The ring is kind of a cheap looking little stamped steel piece that is chrome plated...

Noise will increase.

Silencer Ring and Power Answers

During our recent dyno day,OASIS-3,decided to end all the speculation about the silencer ring and if it hurt performance or not,,See like the many others of us,he had read at one time or another pro's and con's of it removal,,Affecting air flow, turbulance and power losses were the claims,,Well after seeing back to back runs on the Dynojet, both with and without the ring, there is no noticeable difference,,I know the hounds will probably disagree with this comment, but,we got the sheets and numbers to back it up,,On the first pull after removal a couple of HP were lost and 4 ft lbs of torque,,They then did the last pull also without the ring and the numbers were dead on or near the same as with it in,,You will hear it spool up a whole lot better and the sound is music to my ears personally,,just be very carefull when removing it so you do not scar the turbo or slip and hurt the wheel,,Hope I could help.....

ZZZman,

Try it and see if you like it, it's a real simple procedure. If you don't like it you can put it back in. I removed mine and noticed a little more noise. If the person on the passenger side has sensitive ears they might not like it, especially about 2,200 rpm with a load:eek:

My wife didn't really notice the difference but the kids could. After I straight piped the truck it got her attention:D

We did back to back runs at Goerends with and without. No difference. There is a difference between early runs and later (hot) runs though!

One time at bandcamp..... I mean... one time in my garage I took the air filter tube right off the compressor housing of the mighty HX-35 and started her up and built a little boost... . the turbo SCREAMED!! I put it right back on so she would breathe cleaner air. This was before I 'lost' my exhaust too... . it's way loud out the exhaust side now... . almost so loud that removing the silencer ring and taking out that little plastic boot inbetween the fender and airbox didn't seem to make much of a difference in sound.

Spool with my exhaust setup is insane... . and the sound is incredible... I LOVE IT!... . it turns heads EVERYWHERE I go. People mistakenly think that they are getting fuel oil deliveries when in fact it's just me stopping by for a visit in their driveway! The exhaust makes my truck sound as if it has more HP than it actually does... . :D

Word to the wise: after you take out the silencer ring and retaining clip thingy... . grind the clip so that you don't have to 'dig' at it with little screwdrivers.

The end of the retainer clip will look like this (ASCII art time... ):

The little channel that you ground out will make removing it the 2nd time around... should you choose to re-install it..... MUCH easier.

Matt - no plans of re-installation, but have the option.

(it took me about 10 times to fix/edit this message to get the drawing right!! grrr! hehe)

Its amazing what we learn here sometimes,Art class 101,,he he he he he he he he,,I can already see the edit process taking place along with all the mumbling and bumbling,,would have taken me longer though so I have no room to talk,,Holeshot, kids in my neighborhood call mine and "Angry trash truck",,Have to laugh though, they all come a running when I get home, they love the sound as much a me,,Now if I could ever close the right window I may not get wet... ... ... ... .

Window problem

Looks like I'm not the only one with a right side window problem. Mine gets stuck down at times even when it's cold out or hot with the A/C on. Gota love that straight piped sound!!!!! :D :D :D :D

Well, with the cold weather soon upon us I recently purchased a 10' section of aluminized 3" O. D. exhaust pipe... ... $72 list. . I paid $36.

I'm going to connect my downpipe to my tailpipe so that the large clouds of steam come out my tailpipe and not from underneath my cab!! :D I've already gotten the 'look' from a couple of law enforcement officers, but they just think it's a "... . noisy diesel".

Alright, got the ring off.

Don't here any different now. Will try it this week end while

missing silencer ring

zzman:

if you didn't already do it, be sure to check for aluminum filings after you removed the silencer ring. the alien who stole mine scuffed the aluminum housing ever so slightly getting the retaining clip out. i'll probably use some emery cloth today to smooth out the area. i did have to remove a few aluminum filings from the turbo inlet with a towel and some wd40. btw, all, i didn't like straight piped, so have a 4' long, 4" straight thru muffler on now. you can really hear the turbo spool up and wind down out the tailpipe with the muffler, too. :D my wife doesn' like the silencer ring out--the high pitched whine bothers her. i know she has the nose of a german shepherd (olfactory ability, NOT size). it seems her hearing may be on a par with the dog's also.

I find that my truck is not all that loud at all with the straight pipe... . it kinda sounds like a combination between an 18-wheeler and an old Chrysler 225cid Slant-Six..... I just wish I could get more of my turbo whine back... . I think some of it will return with the BHAF modification... .

The ringectomy is an elective surgery much like the catectomy, did it (catectomy) @ 150k no difference... not clogged, waste of driving time!

SLAM THE HOOD AND DRIVE THE I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER OUT OF IT!

My opinion and you are intitled to it!

Mike;)
