I am about to get the tools from Snap On to time my truck, '97 3500. THe question I have is... . My father is a machinist and has a dial indicator, but how would I get the extension that is needed???? Any help ?? Thank you, Happy New Year, Marc

I don't plan on buying the complete kit as I have access to a dial indicator. I am going to buy the individual parts and use my father's indicator, that is where the problem is, I will need the extension that the indicator needs to get down in the delivery valve. If any one has an idea?? Marc

I've done some research into this in the past, b/c I'd like to adjust my timing, but can't spend $200+ on the entire set. I priced dials and extensions at Enco.

The extension part was the only part that I could not get a good feel on. Enco sells them, but they don't appear to be the right size or type. Although I can't tell for sure.

When I get serious, I think I will go by my local Grainger store and see what they have. If memory serves, they sell them too. www.grainger.com

The dial indicator in the kit has a special sleave to get it to fit in the holder, as well as an extension. Just buy the whole kit, it will prolly cost you 30-40 more bucks total.

Snap-On has the Gauge Holder, Socket, and Gear Puller available seperately.

Agreed. Snap-On Sells those parts separately, but $179 for a dial gauge and extension? I can't swing it. I think Firemanmarc and I are looking for the same thing. A $5 extension. to fit through the gauge holder so that the gauge can get a reading when mounted in the holder.

I think out best bet is to buy the snap-on gauge holder (since it's threaded to fit the pump), take it to grainger (or other supply house), and see what they've got to fit it.

I suppose alternatively, we could just use a magnetic base. I would imagine setup would be quite lengthy going that route though.

I was just pointing out that the other parts were available seperately. I thought he was looking for the holder. I get it, you guys need the the dial indicator extension. Maybe a long allen wrench could be machined to fit in the Snap-On holder. I misunderstood what you guys were looking for.

Marc, AndyMan, I edited my previous post. Could you make the extension by machining a long allen wrench since your father is a machinist? Just a thought. -Glen

I finally sat down with my father and the Snap On website... He said it is just an extension, he has several..... If it is true that the Snap On gauge will only work in the adapter, we will drill it out to work with His gauges :) . THe big problem I have right now, is the socket is not available (out of stock) from my Snap On guy. . AndyMan when we get it figured out I will let you know... . My Father is even talking about making the darned things all together... . Thank you for the replies, everyone have a Happy New Year, Marc

I'd appreciate you keeping me in the loop Marc. Always looking to save a buck or two.

Is snap-on out of the gauge holder or the delivery valve socket?

Signal,73 Does Piers have the gauge holder as well as the delivery valve socket?

ALSO, SPX/Miller is supposed to make a timing tool set. You might want to check that out. Do a search here for Miller and timing. You'll find several posts with the correct numbers.

i just finally got my snap on sp500 timing set i first requested over 2 months ago today, on the tuesday before xmas i told my snap on guy i was about to just order it elseware and was tired of waiting, that got his attention he picked up the phone and made it happen, i've had the barring tool for over a month from ebay. if i can remember to take my camera tomorrow ill take some pics of the set and a measurement of the extension
