I just assumed the exhaust would help drop the egts when towing, that was my main concern. As I said before, I just need the truck for towing, but don't want to put a ton of money into it. Thoroughbred Diesel seems to have everything I need, including Firestone airbags. Does anyone on here have any experience with ordering parts from them? Thanks for all your help guys

You don't even need the exhaust unless you just want noise. A bigger straight through exhaust will do nothing for power or economy.

Dunno about that Harve - at the beginning, and MILD mods, perhaps - but as later stuff is added that boosts fueling and air into combustion, all those increased spent gasses HAVE to go somewhere - and the easier that route, the greater the efficiency...

YUP - and mine as well - and that's why when I had Rip install the Mach 1. 6's, he ALSO installed my turbo-back 4 inch exhaust - end result was MORE power, and an average of about 150-200 degrees LESS EGT under full throttle load - and I somehow doubt that was just caused by the bigger injectors... ;)

IIRC Joe Donnelly has reported on more than one occasion in the pages of TDR magazine that the OEM intake and exhaust are completely satisfactory until the engine is capable of producing in excess of 400hp to 450 hp.

The op in this thread has stated he is only seeking mild power increase for towing and not planning to spend a fortune on performance increases.

The Edge Juice w Attitude makes good power especially if you tap the pump. The exhaust wont increase power but does drop egt's quicker. If your planning on going with injectors eventually, an exhaust would be a good idea. Not neccessary with a programmer. Actually I know someone who retained the factory exhaust but removed the muffler and converter and installed a clear thru resonator. Hes running an Edge with rv 275 injectors and doesnt have any issues with egt's.

My '01 is set up just like the above truck, dyno's 335/852 with no EGT issues. In '03 the factory used 3. 5" then in '04. 5 went to 4" exhaust systems. I think 4" for higher HP is a good all around size.

I was told by a diesel tech that a general rule of thumb for diesel engines is 1" of exhaust for every 100 horsepower so that sounds about right.

There seems to be a misunderstanding about power up-grades. A hp gain at peak rpm is not or rather should not be the goal with these trucks except perhaps at a dyno event. For real world use the goal should be a fatter torque curve and the best power closer to the rpm we use most. Both my trucks are tuned with this in mind,it will cost more generaly but the results are also more rewarding. A 4'' exhaust should be used to get the most out of your fueling mods. Interesting to note for those that have not been present at any of the dyno events of the old days. Joe also said that a bigger airbox system was not needed, yet he pulled onto the dyno and removed the lid.

In fairness to Joe, his old '95 was extremely modified. I think it was producing something like 700 hp and a gazillion ft. lbs. of torque. I don't remember if he has reported the hp and tq numbers of the '04 or '05 he drives now but I think it is twin turbo, big injectors, and probably a long list of high dollar parts.

His comments regarding intake and exhaust mods not being needed or effective refer to mildly modified trucks producing <450 hp.

Thanks for all of your input guys. Gonna do a thorough inspection of my exhaust because it is original. If it needs to be replaced, i'll order a 4", if not i'll stick with it.

Again, thanks
