Question? Engine Brake Owners!!!

I was wondering,Does it sound like a Jake Brake on a big rig????

From the cab you hear that deep rumble just like the big rigs but yes from the outside you just get the hissssssssssss sound, I know because I had my wife drive past and hit the exhaust brake, this gave me wood and I passed it on

I assume your question is about exhaust brakes on our trucks, not engine brakes. There is a difference. The exhaust brake slows down the truck by creating back pressure by closing a butterfly in the exhaust system. An engine brake slows down the truck by smoke and mirrors and somehow opening and closing the engine valves. When you hear a big truck slow down and it makes a lot of noise, it's most likely an engine brake.



Jacobs has some information about this on their website. It is illegal for a gov't to post a sign stating not to use Jake Brakes because it is discrimination against a single manufacturer. The politically correct signs now state not to exceed a noise level in dbA.

Most of the signs I have seen say something like



Use of Engine brakes prohibited



Since we use exhaust brakes it doesn't really apply to us. Don't know what an exhaust brake would sound like with a straight pipe at 2800 rpm, but most towns have a noise ordinance.

The Jacobs Engine Brake works by opening the exhaust valve at the top to the compression stroke. This is done by actuating the valve instead of the injector. Here is a link that explains it:
