Guitarists, help me learn!!!

This implement has been sitting half buried on my property since I bought the place 10 years ago. This past weekend I finally got around to digging it out and powerwashing it off, but what exactly is it?

I know very little about farming, but it looks like some sort of a 2-row cultivator to me. Does it attach to a tractor, or was it horse-drawn? Any idea of vintage or brand? It has some numbers and logos that look similar to the IH logo from International Harvester, but I could be wrong.

Any help determining what it is and if it has any value at all would be appreciated.

That looks like part of a set of "planters" to me. See those vertical tubes? Above each of those would've been a hopper, with a flexible metal line running to the top of them. One plow in front of each opens up the dirt. The seeds fall through and two plows behind push dirt on top of them.

I doubt they're worth much, but who knows?

They look like they go on the 3-point hookup on the back of a tractor.

It could be an OLD planter. That was beofre the time of three pooint hitches though, notice nowhere for the top link to go. It looks like an old IH, judging by the logos stamped into it.

Yup, old IH planter. It mounts up under the front (middle) of the tractor, raises with the hand lever. Might have been early hydraulic lift too. :)

Hey, ditto on the JD. I've got a 332 tractor with a 16HP Yanmar diesel.

Plus they build them 5 miles up the road in Horicon, WI, so I bought a Deere to help support the local economy. ;)

looks like a corn planter for the early Cub model Farmalls or even for the C's and A's. I would suggest washing it up and putting it on Ebay where you will get the best money for it. I sold one for a green tractor not long ago that was very similar that fetched nearly 1000. 00!

I am not sure how far it is between the openers, but it could also be openers for applying fertilizer. Looks alot like a planter but it ran between the rows to apply nitrogen after the corn was up and growing. There is definatly part of it missing, but that helps make for good converstion.

Update: I found a guy online who knows vintage IH equipment and sent him a picture, and here is part of his reply. There are a lot of parts missing, but I'm probably going to put it out on eBay soon and see how it does... ...

First and foremost, there are definately parts missing, and that has made it difficult to compare with old pictures of when the planters were new. However, the greatest chances are that it is a No. 10-48 Lister planter. The planter itself is definately a lister because of the large shovel in the front and the two smaller covering shovels in the back. The only other model IH made was the No. 10-47, which had a tool bar for doing four rows. They are called corn and cotton planters, and were sold almost exclusively in the south. It mounted on the back of an F-20 Farmall supplied with a hydraulic lift. I think whoever owned this planter before you had the fanciest thing on the block at one time, as it is one of IH's first planters that were solely designed for the tractor, rather than being a converted horse planter. Everyone else in your area was probably pulling a horse planter, maybe even by horses rather than tractor, and your guy was out there on top of the world.

I love corn checks... or is that checked corn???

That planter is darned near old enough that the seed tubes were fed by hand...

That's a very nice find you've got there. Clean it up and make a nifty lawn ornament outta it.
