Got a transmission shield question. I have gotten fed up with broken 904/999 transmisions. I have killed a few trannies and broken my second torque converter snout now. Turbo Action is going to switch my converter over to a 727 one so I can go that route.

Question. The dragstrip here has actualy started to follow IHRA rules for tech. So when I get my new motor done(it runs 11. 60s now motivation to take it apart is kinda hard to get at the moment) I should be well into the 10s on the juice which I will need a shield for. Has anyone ever tried the CSI carbon fiber trans shield in an A-body?? Did it fit the floor pan without major mods? If no one has tried that what kind have you used and did it fit? I am really not interested in cutting the floor up on my Formula S. I am in no means an originality freak but thats alot of work lol. I hope the 727 doesn't slow me down to much!! Thanks for any input that may be posted!

Clark, I would go over to Moparts.com and ask over there. There are lots of racers there, and likely know more about it. I did see it in print, but not in person. I myself use a blanket.

One thing to think about, If you deal with summit you could ask them if any mods are required, they might not know or say sure it'll fit. If it does not, you could hold them to it and return it. They were always easy on returns anyhow. I think I remember seeing a new case out there which is SFI approved as a shield, though that might be mega buck$$

Don't go racing much anymore, so I am not familiar with this CSI unit, but everyone I have talked to with a metal sheild of any kind had to beat up on the floorpan, some really bad. I wouldn't do it. These sheilds are made to fit the transmission, not the body. I am not in love with the idea of a blanket, but that is the route I would go. I would forget the "juice" too. Several 3200# 340's in this area running 10's "on the motor". Better to run 11's all year long than a few 10's with juice just to watch it explode. Just my observations, do what you wish.

I put Nitrous on my 360 to make it keep up with my 340 lol. . I am hooked now my car will always have nitrous LOL. My dad has a 69 Barracuda that runs 10. 60s with no nitrous but its a 14:1 motor. My car is driven to and from the track about 3 times a week in the summer time so I need to be able to run on 93 octane for motor passes and small shots of nitrous. If I ever want to really throw down the numbers race gas will be needed for nitrous over 150hp of course. I have been luck so far I guess. I have around 150 passes on this $300 360 shortblock I have been running until I get my 340 going again. Over 100 of those passes have been with 150hp worth of nitrous. Never has missed a beat and the only thing it has hurt so far is the high gear clutches in my 904 :D which is comeing out anyways.

The CSI shield is thin and is supposed to hug the transmission very tight, my dad has one for his 904 but has not installed it yet. It is a very light wieght high qaulity piece, does it fit... not real sure yet lol

Clark

I have a tube chassis car so I have lots of room but I just put one of the CSI sheilds on. It does hug the trans tight so I would think the only mod would be the seam where the firewall and hump meet may need to be trimed. If you had one of the aluminum shields and it fit, then the CSI one will fit with no mods.

I just found it in the Jegs catalog. I like it. I think it might take up less room than my blanket. I would give it a try!

And it doubles as a flywheel shield also, which a blanket does not. And those blankets are heavy. My car is heavy enough for a small block a-body... 3535 with me in it

Clark

Badfish, If you get the CSI piece and it does fit, please post here as a blanket/sheild has been on my mind for a long time. Also, at what ET does the IHRA require a blanket/sheild for bracket cars, 11. 99? Thanks

You also need to cut off the assembly line ears on each side of the bell housing and the mount for the bell-crank kick down linkage.

I am an old dragracer [superstock-hemi/jr. dragster-hemi/ pitted for butch leal-funnycar/pdq-top fuel] but I am a little out of date. But I would like to know why are you breaking trannys and T/C snouts? Are you running a good T/C? Are you running a stock flex plate? Was the input bushing sized to the T/C snout? Is the motor moving? Is the frame flexing?

I don't want to sound like a know it all but you seem to have a problem that should be researched before you upgrade. We used to run the 727 in AA/FA's and never broke one case. We ran clutches rather than T/C's.

Just interested.

I am running a 904 not a 727... however I am changing over to a 727. The converter I am running is a Turbo Action 8" 3800 stall. According to turbo action the 904s breaking snouts is something that is not uncommon at all. The 904 is basicly a 6 cylinder trans anyway. As far as I know the only V-8 four barrel cars that came with them were the 73 and 74 360 dusters and darts. And we all know there was no such thing as horsepower then lol.

I don't drive my car every day but I do drive it alot really. When the weather is nice it goes to the track 3 times a week. Usualy making at least 5 passes each time. I think its the street driving that really hurts it. This last transmission did not break but high gear would not hold on the nitrous at all. Right now I am running a motor that only makes 300hp to the ground without nitrous. . 430 to the ground with a 150shot. The 340 I am building is expected(you know how that goes) to put down a little over 400 on the motor. And 550+ depending on how much nitrous I feel like running that day lol adjustable horsepower is so cool.

And just for the recond I am not breaking cases :) that would be real trouble. I have broken a few hard parts like overunning clutches ETC. I broke 2nd gear before also. If I tear this 727 up I am going to put a damn 4 speed in it LOL.

Clark

I think I need to let you know about a little trick with the 727. Try putting a set of rear clutch discs in place of the normal front ones. and make sure there is only 6 springs in the front pack. I also use 2-3 quarts of 30wt engine oil.

I used to biuld 727's for dragracing and I know they will hold 1800hp without a problem.

In our superstock Hemi Satelite we were putting 400 hp to the rear wheels at half throttle. [maxed out the dyno of the day.

In the aa/fa's we were at approx 1800hp. [yes we ran autos]

And as far as a 73 duster goes--GAG.

The last good car was built from 71 on back.
