what oil should I run in my truck, HDD Series 3000 SAE 5W-30 or AME SAE 15W-40. I also plan to run the BMK-11. I live in vegas and see freezing temps only a few times a year

i would recommend the 15w-40 for that climate. just because of the heat that you see in the summer. very good choice with the bypass also.

Good question, as I am considering this too...

But I see temps from 110*F+ (north TX and OK in summer) to -30*F (great lakes and NM in winter)... yes, a wide range!

I currently run a BMK-11 and have 100k+ on the clock... my main concern is the higher mileage I already have...

Are these oils going to be affected by the new current CJ-4 regulations/requirements???

Wayne?

The Deo 5w-40 is the only oil affected by the cj-4 formulation. The Ame 15w40 has such a low pour point already, their really isn't point in running a lower viscosity oil for the cold season.

AME 15W40 all the way. Great high temp stability, and with a cold pour point of -44F, it performs at low temps as well. I live in northern WI. -15 below this morning, not plugged in. Starts and goes just fine. Oil pressure comes up just as quick as in summer. Back when my '02 was new and had conventional on board, it would barely crank in -20 temps. AMSOIL makes one helluva product.

I run the 15w40 here in Texas, probly about the same climate as you see. It works great, I have Amsoil in all my vehicals, anywhere they take oil for the last 6 years, no problems. :)

I would say the 15w40 would be the better of the two.

What do you guys think about running it ina CTD with over 100k on it... I'd be replacing dino oil (Rotella)...

Would there be any potential issues??

Yep, like Sled Puller said, it is no problem. I just switched over my sister's 1993 Cummins 4x4 with 131,xxx on it. AMSOIL front to back. Truck has never been happier.

Either oils wieght will work well for you. The 5W30 HDD is a little different than most guys realize. Yes, it is a 30 wieght oil, but has a higher film strength thant the 15W40 AME. I use the 5W30 in my truck with the hopes it frees up a few extra ponies and protects the motor better.

Good call on the bypass filter. I have one sittin here waiting to go on mine!
