ive been running my 5" miters for about a year now, with very minimial soot issues. when there are real heavy down pours i put coffee cans over my stacks.

TD:

I got the bombing bug and I'm itching to put stacks on my '01 quad cab short-bed. I would appreciate any guidance you can provide. I would appreciate a list of what I'll need, a diagram, or anything else you can provide.

Did you use a resonator? How do you accomodate movement/flexure between engine and bed?

Where did you get the setup with the flouresent yellow pipes shown in your pics - their awesome.

I wish I had a nickle for every time I drove thru Carlisle on the TP. I'm originally from Pittsburgh, now living near Charlotte NC.

GO STEELERS!

Regards, Joe

(If I screwed up this message somehow, please forgive me - it's my first one on TDR. )

twopipes, you can get flex pipe. Don't need to run 100% solid pipe. I have some on my truck to allow some movemnt, on or off-road.

Same here. Just get some large coffee cans to throw over em and you'll be fine.

Hey Mark, your truck is looking goooood !

Yep, I'm stackless. I couldn't take it anymore, between the sound in the cab and the soot on the truck I caved in and now have the 4" Bully Dog system from the BD brake back. Just to keep it interesting we inverted the muffler for some extra sound. To be honest I needed the bed space back as well. No more toolbox, aux fuel tank or stackasorous :D

I do kinda miss the looks of shock as I pull into a parking area or pass construction workers on the side of the road, but now my wife allows us to actually use my truck for family outings so that's a good thing.

i can't imagine taking off the stacks. loud pipes save lives, right?! if u need bed space just by a trailer make that bad a-- diesel work!!!!

Loud pipes saves lives is some ridiculous garbage Harley riders came up with. In reality, if you are driving at any speed you will be going faster than the sound carries forward.

Maybe you want to hook up a trailer everytime you need to haul something, not my idea of fun. I'd rather have the bed space and yes I do have a trailer. To each his own, just don't plan on those loud pipes saving many lifes IMHO.

ive got the self draining crossover with turnouts... i like then and sure it can be a pain sometimes when u want to haul something in the bed. ive been looking for something to install behind them to isolate the cargo from the stacks. .

"if you are driving at any speed you will be going faster than the sound carries forward.

"

the trucks dont move faster than the speed of sound. i cant agree with the saying "loud pipes save lives" but im sure its gotta help in giving notification that your there!

to the above question on a parts list:

4" downpipe ( had from previous 5" kit)

6' piece of 4" with 4" id on one end. ($55. 00)

22" long piece of stainless flex (free)

lsfarm's stack crossover ($250. 00)

2- 5" od turnout stacks ($130. 00)

4- 4" stainless band clamps (@ $6. 50ea. )

total $461. 00

not to bad considering i sold the 5" from the transfer case back w/ muffler for $160. 00

now i only have $301. 00 in it.

Apparently you are not picking up what I am laying down. I realize that our trucks do not go the speed of sound. What I am saying is that your loud exhaust is not going to save a life in a typical accident scenario. The phrase was coined by bike riders.

If it makes y'all feel better to justifiy your straight stacks by thinking that you might save a life ( LOL) knock yourself out. I have been on plenty of accident scenes and can tell you that loud exhuasts did little to help when the vehicle was involved in a MVA. I have also seen pedestrians hit by straight piped vehicles.

Then again, what do I know. Since you are the experts I'll let you decide.

Still waiting for the leather and lace Harley crowd to jump in and add a reply :D

I forgot to mention but I still have my Stack hat that I used for my single stack. It's kinda sooted up a bit but if anyone would care to use it send me a pm with a shipping addy and I'll send it to ya. Mine was sized to slip over the end of a 6" Bull Hauler, might be a sloppy fit on a smaller stack but would still work.

Contrary to what I read above the Bull Hauler does allow rain/snow to enter when the truck is not running. I have BD step 5 injectors which really soot up the pipe. I would get a good soot shower whenever I started the truck and if it had sat in just warm humid air overnight. The stack hat all but did away with the problem as long as I remembered to put it on. If you are running smaller injectors I'd hazard a guess you would have much less of a problem with soot exiting on start up.

For the record, I was just funnin with y'all especially the Harley guys. I respect all that ride, period.

What I mean't by out driving the sound of the exhaust is this... If you are tooling down the road at 75MPH and are overtaking cars, they are not going to hear you until you are upon them. I have seen this many times at work while responding to a call with the siren, and the siren is facing fowards and louder than a straight stacked diesel.

Hope that clears it up. Enjoy your stack/stacks, I sure did with mine until the very end. Guess the spousal unit refusing to ride in the truck had something to do with as well. I can yell you one thing, I don't miss having a 4 ton ash tray anymore.

my 5" straight pipe is louder to passers by and other cars than my stacks were... it's just a LOT quieter INSIDE! :D

oddly enough, the stacks didn't bother the girlfriend as much as they bothered me!

No doubt Forest, mine's the same now. Virtually it's a straight pipe since we inverted the BD muffler end to end, just a small amount less loud than the stack. Since it's now back down at the "car level" I'm sure I have ****** off more than a few motorists. Inside the cab is where I hear the difference. My wife says she can still hear me coming from a long way off :D Still kinda miss seeing the smoke exiting in my sideview mirror, catch myself looking for it even now.

That mean you took the new stacks off already? That sucks. You out to be good at swapping exhust parts by now.
