Question for turbo charger gurus

I was doing my service at oil change routine for my '95 this evening and discovered that I have some play in my turbo charger shaft. It is not bad enuff to touch the housing yet and still feels very smooth. This is a stock turbo and has 172K miles on it. Is there an overhaul kit to replace bearings and/or bushings? If so, where can I get one and how much is the price?

Joe, you have to remember that the turbo shaft rides on a film of oil while operating, some play is normal. I wouldn't fool with it till the seals start to leak, which could be a long time.

I'm a bit concerned because this is more play than what I expect as normal. I did find a Holset repair manual. The job doesn't look too bad if a balanced part does not have to be replaced. I will see how much wheel to housing clearance I have with feeler gauges tomorrow. Then I will decide if I need to worry. Anyway, a source for a repair kit would be good to know.

Bearing clearance should be 0. 016" to 0. 023". Because the parts must be balanced so closely, bushing replacement and parts inspection should be done by a top quality turbo shop. The compressor wheel is not a tight enough fit that you should try r&r it yourself. It would need to be rebalanced even if you seemed to get it back as it was.

Turbo Rebuild

I just rebuilt my turbo a few months back. There is a complete rebuild kit available from a Holset dealer, which you can find on their website.

I just followed the manual that i got off their website, and it was a very simple job. The only trouble i had was installing one shaft seal on the compressor end, but with a little work it went right in.

Just remember to mark everything as you disassemble!

The turbo guru we communicate with is Pias at Bell Turbo in Stockton. They can do the balancing if necessary. After 172K it might be a good idea. Seems that balance problems are what take out the berings.
