Reloading basics

A buddy of mine bought the above trike. It has a VW 2000cc. dual carb engine with automatic transmission. I don't know what year either the engine or transmission are. I know it is a 3 sp. auto. (not auto-stick) What is happening is that the transmission is making the first to second shift just fine. But then it is not making the second to third shift at all. Let me clarify this, it is getting stuck between second and third and not completely shifting into third. After a few rev's on the engine, she'll shift. Now it seems to not happen when the gear selector is forced into the D position and held there (with a rubber bungie). Or at least it's less apt to do this. What could be doing this, and how can I fix it?

The transmission fluid isn't bad. It's a clean red color and it doesn't smell. No leaks anywhere. My guess is that it is a linkage adjustment issue for the selector on the trike. Or it may be a band adjustment issue although I doubt it. Throw some ideas at me. I'd really like to get this working for him. Thanks.

Sounds like linkage to me too, also check the motor mounts and transmission mounts also. I never worked on a trike and dont know how it mounts up. Try powerbrakeing it and see how far the motor moves. You can also disconect the linkage and put the trans in 3th and see what happens. If it works fine then it is the linkage or mounts. If it still acts up it is the trans. problem. The fluid can be nice and red and still be bad.

95% agreement linkage/5% suspects vacuum leak

Your phrase "... . after a few revs on the engine, she'll shift... . " causes me to also expect linkage (engine rpm change leads to a little bit of 'torque rock'-ing, and during one of them, the linkage lines up and trips the shift... . during that change of R's, though, you also should get some variance in vacuum levels, and that may be what's tripping the 2-3 shift to complete. (like the title says, though, I'm suspicious of the one way more than the other)... rm--

BTW, even w/ only 1st and 2nd, that's a real cool ride!

For what its worth it sounds like a vac. prob. I use to have a neighbor that was a VW. guy and he had one auto and said that was the only one he couldn't get right. (transmission trouble)

Thanks alot for the help. I'll adjust the linkage this weekend and let you guys know if that was it. A vacuum leak just never occurred to me. But that would make sense too. Thanks again. BTW the first to second shift will lift the front end off the ground. :D I don't know what second to third will do.
