Is a fetus a parasite?

This question was hotly debated today, at the shop. We didn't come to a conclussion, so maybe you guys can help.

Doc

In technical scientific terms a fetus would be a parasite. Emotionally and morally is another story all together.

No question, a parasite. Isn't a parasite an organism that latches onto and lives off of another? Sounds like a parasite. Although I suspect there's a waiver for species reproduction being qualified a parasite; i. e. a loophole that puts species propogation in another category. Such as: a parasite more specifically a foreign organism that latches onto another -- whereas a same species fetus wouldn't be considered a parasite... ... UNLESS the egg is fertilized outside the body and implanted into a host uterus of a different mother to carry to term. Cool. Interesting brain teaser.

Parasite: One who eats at the table of another; One who lives on others without making a fitting return; An animal or plant which lives on or in a living organism, often injuring the host. (Courtesy of Webster's New World Dictionary)

Yes, a fetus definitely eats at the table of another, but IMHO they can, if properly raised, make a fitting return. #ad

BTW, how did this discussion get started at work? Just curious... LOL

You probably don't want to ask - remember this is Doc we're talking about! #ad
Having just been through it a little over a year ago I'd have to say yes, a fetus is a parasite - but I love her all the same #ad

Doc, Where ya been... ..... missed ya.

Good thought to ponder.
I say no. Parasites and the host must be of two or more kinds (different species).

Cheers, Joe

I suppose if somebody called my boy a "parasite", my first inclination would be to take a swing at them. Then I remember that outstretched hand, palm up, #ad
coming into my line of vision every time he's got a date or needs lunch money...
Only regret I have, is I wish I had a couple more parasites to raise, one kid ain't enough...

I have a boy and a girl parasite. I would like to have more but i think the time is near for my wife to have her catalytic converter gutted. Ahh! Those wonderful mood swings to look forward to.

I'm in the process of building my fortress of solitude in case of emergency.

OK, now consider this…

Is the fetus really a part of the mammal’s body?

The egg is in the ovary until it’s released. At that time, the ovary and the egg is part of the female’s body, right? Once the egg is released, is it no longer a part of the female? If it remains a part of the female, then ultimately the fetus would be just as much a part of the mammal as it’s legs or arms. Although a leg or an arm feeds from the torso it isn’t a parasite because it wouldn’t survive without the torso.
