Camper with ex.cab short bed ?

I've been toying with the idea of buying a fifth or a tag and was wonder what you'll thought, I've heard that you can find used one allot cheaper but I don't want any junk. What I wanted was plenty of room but not so big that I have to worry about overloading the truck and still be able to pull a small trailer with a seedo or 4 wheeler on it. I don't need all the bells and whistles just a nice trailer that sleeps say 4-6 and then I'll add a generator to the want list. I'm just about to start looking as this will be a long looking project and need to know about what price range they run in(say 3-4 year old ones) and what to stay away from(models ect. ) adn tips or help would be appriciated.

DTT stuff will be in next week so keep that in mind!

JF- I too was in the 5'er market and just recently went with a used 30'. I went used, well, first of all because of price, but mostly because you will find that a new model will depreciate faster than anything you can imagine. You can tell a good quality unit by the type of frame it is on, the cabinets & doors (real wood or photocopied adhesive paper), matl's used for flooring, roof, etc. Don't know what your towing with so that mat play into a 5'er or travel trailer.

I own my 2nd 5er and selected the 5er because of the way they pull. I've heard some say that with the right setup, the other trailer can handle just as well. You also wouldn't have so much trailer sticking up in the air.

A 4-5 year old rig that cost $25-30K new should sell in the $15-20K range. If the recession continues, you will be able to pick up some good deals.

My first 5er was used and less than a year old and was deeply discounted. My 2nd one was a year old and was a consignment sale with the owners highly motivated to sale.

A 4-5 year old rig will also show how well it was put together. If things are going to fall off, they probably already have.

Check out the fridge, water heater, power converter, AC, and heat. Also check out the slider and power jacks if installed. If the battery(s) are discharged, insist on a new set.

Look for water stains on the ceiling and walls.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info!

Went out today and looked at Trailbay, Traillite, and Tohoe's in the new versions. The used ones were well used and didn't like the price verses what they were like. The new ones rocked but there is a price on them, I can't really justify a 30k camper although they are nice. I guess I'll keep looking, thanks for the tips I'll look at that while shopping, or dream shopping.

You might want to check out the 5er I have for sale in my sig. It's somewhat higher priced that what you are looking for, but might help see what's on the market.

Generally a 3 to 4year old RV will sell @ 50 cents on the dollar as to what it sold for new. There are so many repos out there I go cross-eyed looking. Had a Lincoln/Mercury dealer call me the other day. Elderly couple had bought a brand new 27ft. Nomad with super slide (99 model). Pulled it home and he died. Never been slept in. They paid a little over $27K for the unit. It still has all the plastic on the carpet and furniture. The unit is brand new. It can be bought for $16K. That's the kind of deals you look for.
