Yes, a buddy of mine is about to buy a '94 reg cab CTD 4x4 1 ton single tire..... yes a single tire 1 ton. It has 3500 badges on it and the guy he is getting it from I have known him for quite a few years and I don't think he put those badges on there.

Anyways, I was wondering what size rear end it has? I believe the front is a Dana 60, right? He had said that both the front and rear had open diffs and they had 3. 55 gears.

Also what turbo does it have? Does it have a HX like my '00?

What kind of transmission does it have? I know it is an auto and I didn't think they had the 47re then.

I am also planning on buying a '94 or '95 3/4 ton CTD 5 speed soon to play with. What am I looking at as far as the size of the rear end?

Also, how do you turn the 4x4 automatic vacuum transfer case in to a fully manual locking system? I hate the way the 4x4 is set up.

Sorry for all the questions, trying to round them all up to put in 1 thread.

Thanks,

JD

I don't think they made a SRW in 94. Maybe it has the 2500 wheels and box? Check how it's titled ot look at the tag in the door.

I'm pretty sure it's a Dana 80 like all the rest. It's a combination of a 70 center with different tubes.

Probably a Holset W1B (or something like that) which is what the 1st gens had or an HX35. Is the intake housing painted? If so it's probably the older one.

I think they used a 47 RH (H for hydraulic control instead of E for electronic)

Not sure what you mean

I used a pneumatic switch for a liftgate control to switch the vaccuum to one side or the other. (~ $25 plus some fittings and hose)

Take the VIN to a dealer to find out about it. Especially if all the recalls have been done.

A single wheel drive 3500 was not available in '95. I think the only difference between the '94 and '95 was that an extended cab (Club Cab) was not available in '94.

I've never had a bit of problems with the stock 4X4 setup. I use it quite a bit. It was especially nice once when I had to travel a road the went over five ridges. Each one had chain controls. The lower parts of the road had no snow. Just reach down and move the shift lever without stopping or getting cold. Pretty nice.

JD,

Unless that truck was made for some special (outside the US?) market, it's a 2500. I'm sure that all the 3500's had dual rear wheels until this year. That's why it was such big news.

The advice to take the VIN to a dealer is good. You should do that. From my 1995 service manual here's a sample VIN:

1B7HF16X*SS100001

The first 1:

1 = US

2 = Mexico

B = Dodge

7 = truck (as opposed to bus, etc. )

H: GVWR

H = 6001-7000

J = 7001-8000

K = 8001-9000

L = 9001-10,000

M = 10,001-14,000

W = Hydraulic Brakes

(note: My 2500 truck is a "K")

F: Line

C = 4x2

F = 4x4

The second 1: Series

1 = 1500

2 = 2500

3 = 3500

6 = misc.

6: Body

3 = Club Cab

6 = Conventional Cab, Chassis Cab

X: Engine

C = 5. 9 diesel

W = 8. 0 10-cylinder

etc.

*: check digit

The first S: model year

S = 1995

The second S: Plant Location

S = Dodge City

G = Saltillo

M = Lago Alberto Assembly

100001: Six-digit serial number

------------

My 1995 automatic has a Dana 60 front axle (build code DJF) and a Dana 70 rear axle (build code DRE). Only the 3500 series had the modified Dana 80 axles in 1995. My axle ratios are 3. 54 (build code DMD). The second line on the axle's metal tag should start with "3 54" (note: no decimal point) for the 3. 54 ratios. My rear axle is limited slip (build code DSA). The front axle is always an open differential.

------------

I can't help you with the turbo, but the transmission is a 47RH (build codes DGB and DGY), as posted earlier.

------------

If you get a 1995, 3/4 ton (2500 series) truck, you will get a Dana 70 axle, at least with the diesel engine. I don't know if other axles were available with other engines or not.

------------

If you search these forums, you'll find lots of ways to switch your handy vacuum axle disconnect into less convenient ways to shift into four-wheel-drive. I haven't done it on either of my trucks.

------------

I'm not willing to walk out to the barn to see where the build codes are on my 1995 truck. As I remember, they are on a label somewhere under the hood. They may also be on a label in the glove box or on a door frame or something. A dealer can give you a printout of all of them for your truck based upon the VIN.

------------

I haven't covered everything, but I hope this helps.
