I was looking at Geno's website for gauges and a saw two Autometer Phantom Egt gauges. One was the standard street gauge with all the "stuff" to hook it up and the other is the same thing but labled (with competition probe). This one is 87 dollars more.

What is the difference, and is one worth 87 dollars more then the other???

Any info would be great!!!

Also are Autometer guages reliable or should I go with a different brand. (I picked them because they were pretty :) )

In talking with Ted Jannetty, He recommends the Competition Probe. This is because of the vibration and heat the probe had to deal with. He said he sold the street probe to 3 people, each one came back within a month. he then replaced it with the comp. probe.

Spend the extra money once and get the comp probe. Thats what I have and thats my Honest opinion. :)

Also IMHO the Autometers are the best around. 90% of all racecars can't be wrong.

That's interesting to hear Kevin... cause my scenario was just the opposite. I had the comp probe and it wasn't accurate at all. It would always be about 100 degrees off. I talked to Autometer about this and they told me to ship it back and they would replace it.

The second Comp probe they sent me, they say was calibrated. . but it was even worse. I then went out and bought one of the street probes and it is a ton more accurate then the others.

I'm running the "street" probe and have not noticed any problems with it. I installed it about 14 months ago. When I talked to Autometer, they said the competition probe was for people running nitrous and really high HP. There was a good discussion a couple of TDR issues about various pryometer probes.

Been running the Competition series probe for two years now, no problems. Still accurate.

AutoMeters seem to be strange that way, some go bad, some don't. Like the electric fuel pressure sending unit. I'm on my third one.

Yeah, it's annoying. But it'd be worse if they weren't such a great company about taking care of every customer !!!

ONE thing that confuses some guys, is that with a "cold" engine, they expect to see 0 degrees indicated on the pyro - but the one *I* had always displayed slightly less than 100 degrees - and Banks pointed out in accompanying literature that the pyro will indicate AMBIENT temperature along with the additional provided by the exhaust - so if you have a 100 degree day, that's gonna show before ya even START yer engine! ;) ;)

just wondering, but has anyone heard of a pyro tip breaking off and going through the turbo? that would be real bad. . what is the likelyhood of such a thing happening?

From what I understand, the comp. is a smaller diameter probe, which registers temperture changes quicker. I'm using the comp. probe and don't have any complaints. While idling, I can tap the throttle and it moves the needle a little. I was told that the street probe would not react as fast and would'nt move the needle.
