I had the Mopar Severe Duty Fuel filter added onto my truck (done at the dealer). I have had it about 4 months or so now. I was wondering about draining the water out of it. Last night I twisted the drain cap (on the bottom of the filter) and water began dripping out. My question is, how to I know when the water is all out? I got quite a bit out of the filter and it looked like water (smelled like diesel) - as it was a clear liquid. Bottom line, how do I know when to stop draining - I would assume I would be able to tell when the droplets changed from water to diesel, right? Goes from clear to ??

Any tips, help appreciated.

I usually drain about 8 oz. into an old glass fruit jar, let it settle and check for water once it separates.

I have a HD 10 micron primary filter and 2 micron secondary filters on my truck we installed 140K miles ago... I changed them last in Mid March... and the time before that was Oct 2010. . this system was installed when the truck was new. . I used to check the primary filter... as suggested by JJ at first every 4 months... and in the 4-6 oz of fuel might get a 1/2 teaspoon full... so I finally gave up... I did check the filter in March when I put a new filter in place... less than a table spoon in over 2 years...

I fuel at bigger locations as my truck tows about 80% of the time so that's usually a truck stop. . I have 2 tanks and fill one from one side and the other tank from the other side... I guess this might catch me some time... but to date its not been a problem. . at one time I was running several trucks and over 1500 gal a month in those trucks... I used the same basic standard in all of them and didn't have a problem... A lot of Pacific Pride or CNF card locks. .

I currently travel 6 or 7 western states and starting next year we'll include Canada and Alaska. . Hope this helps...

I try to fuel where there is a filter at each pump... between the pump and hose...
