Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Question On Engine Noise?

When accelerating and I have the go pedal to the floor I can hear a clicking or tapping noise I am guessing is from the engine. If I let up just a touch on the go pedal, the noise stops. Firewall it and it starts the noise again. It is not real loud but definitely detectable. The engine is bone stock and has about 11K on it. I initially thought the injection pump might be making this noise and checked the fuel pressure up to the pump with my Briar Hopper gauge and the pressure is 6 psi @ WOT in 5th gear minimum. 15 psi @ idle. Oil pressure stays over 40 psi and coolant temp at 190. I buy my fuel at the Flying J so it is fresh. Has anyone had this issue or is this normal noise and nothing to worry about? I have added diesel fuel additives (John Deere, Howes, & Power Service silver bottle) and it makes no difference in the noise. I am planning to get the tech at the Dodge dealer to go for a ride with me to check it out but I would like to have a good idea of what this could be if it is not normal. I am hoping maybe someone here has noticed this or had this issue before. Thanks for any help.

I believe that is a normal noise for an injection pump. I have it too. 50,000 miles so far and no problems.

JStull, thanks for the reply. Guess you and I must be the only one who notice this. Did you ask the dealer service tech about this? I am curious even if this is normal noise what exactly it is?

Man from what I am told the VP44 all by itself makes enough noise it sounds like it will detonate. They are very loud units indeed.

Listen to any 24 valve closely and you will hear it. I have noticed it on all the trucks I have listened to. Each truck sounds a bit different, mostly because of bombs, so you have to pick the VP44 sound out but it is there. Don't worry, just throw that peddle to the floor and enjoy. Check your fuel pressures often with a gauge!

also, your lift pump pressures look great! I wish mine were that good. time to scrape up $165 for a new pump. Good luck!

Your lift pump should still be under warranty shouldn't it? What kinda pressure is your pump showing? There is a volume check that the deal is supposed to do as well.
