I have dialed up my pump,1/4 turn on star wheel, clocked pump diaphram 90 degrees clockwise, 1 and 1/2 turns in on the power screw after taking off the steel collar, and 1 turn in on the smoke screw. I am very happy with the results so far. I have a egt guage in the mail on the way before I do any more. Boost is 17 lbs max with stock turbo and stock injectors. I think the next step is new injectors. Does anyone have any advice on what injectors to upgrade to? Also, does my boost sound right? Thanks Copterdoc

Ditto on the POD's. Good that you have the pyrometer on the way, you're going to need it. Since you'll probably be removing the turbo to install the temperature probe, this would be a good time to change to a smaller exhaust housing. Like JFitzgerald said, there's been some discussion of this topic lately and you should find lots of info if you search around in this forum.

turbine housing

 Hey buddy, you might want to change the turbine housing to a 16 and see how fast it spools up. Its easy and fairly inexpensive to do. Then... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... POD's:) :) :) :) :) Tim

Welcome!

I've been towing 12k for the last five years or so. I think the best bet on the opacity test would be to simply cut back on the fuel delivery for the test and then after reset the pump. I've had some egt issues but a slight backing off of the full load screw seems to have corrected that.

Elevation does make a big difference in what you can do with the enhanced fuel delivery

Lucas PODs are the way to go. I had a set in my crew cab and they kicked butt:D :D :D . I also picked up some fuel mileage and got to turn down the injection pump. The new owners had me take the truck to Cummins to have it checked out and dinoed. Stu, the mechanic checking out the truck liked them as well but he said I should have a 14cm waste gated turbo instead of the 16cm that was on the truck.

Place to get the injectors and turbo is Piers Diesel, 604-853-9396

:D :D

Another injector option is Bosch Power Wagons. I hear that they don't smoke as much as the Lucas injectors, and cost less. They make good power too. :D

bought em

Yea I bought the power wagons. I wanted the pods but I feared for my trannys life. Thanks to everyone for their advice. copterdoc

Copterdoc,

My truck has the PW's. In addition you should have the timing changed to around 1. 4 plus turn the rpm up to about 2900. You will be surprised at the result. :D :D

You bet altitude makes a huge difference in EGT. Getting 27lbs or so boost, and max EGT around 1100 at WOT down at 7000' running empty up minor grades on the interstate.

Went elk hunting this weekend up near Buena Vista, near Taylor reservoir for those that know the area. Saw a few, awesome weather, great sunrises and sunsets, and downright warm during the day.

Going over CottonWood pass (11000', or thereabouts), and Wilkerson Pass (10,000'?), egt's were easy to get to 1200 at WOT and I'd have to back off. Boost was 27lbs still it seemed, give or take. Sure was fun passing folks up the back side of cottonwood in the smokey old dodge, they didn't know what hit 'em!

I added a BHAF as well to the setup in my sig. Power Wagons are nice, driveable, clean injectors. My POD's are a bit rough compared to (just noiser and not as refined through the power band), and definately smoke more.

You and I must have the pumps set up differently! My PW injectors are NOT very "clean". The truck does run good though:)

I want to turn the smoke screw back a little to see if I can decrease the smoke without hurting performance too bad.

Have you installed the power wagon's yet?Still can't make up my mind on power wagon's or pod's. Talked to the only diesel performance shop in these parts and they said they build their own injectors (use the original housings)!Said if truck ran funny afterwards it would need a pump!Quoted $700. 00 on injectors?Think i'm going to stick with Piers etc. Just don't want lots of smoke and rougness on accel as commented in some threads. MY truck runs great as is just want more towing power at 60 to 70 mph. I can get kinda werid on descions sometimes, comes with middle aged I guess.

Try the thread about 6-8 below where this one is in the 1st gen section. Formula has layed out how to adjust the RPM

Stan,

I certainly agree we must have something set up different. I found the PW's to be pretty clean. Watching Mark's burnout video showed very little smoke considering what he was doing.

Is your pump turned up pretty aggressively? I know I can make the world go away behind me even with stock injectors when I get to playing with that power screw!

I swapped from power wagons to pods without changing my pump or anything else and I sure increased my smoke output between the two. Increased my power output as well! Timing (trial and error, and by ear) and the BHAF reduced the smoke to tolerable levels. I need to get rid of the kink in the pipe over the rear axle, then I am about done. Except for the old Smokey Mount I need to treat myself to!

DPKetchum. PW's are $300 or so, POD's are $550 or so. PODs are going to give you EGT issues if you don't get a lot of air in and a lot of air out, so be prepared to spend more money on intake and exhaust, plus a turbo housing. Towing with POD's coupled with altitude you have to be even more careful on the EGT side.

You won't be disappointed with either, though often folks want more once they start.

Dont't mind tweaking pump etc. Have the 14mm waste gaited housing and 3. 5 exhaust,I'm done with those issues,Don't want to spend any more$$on another turbo housing etc. Really want a 2003 h. o but!!So I'm leaning towards power wagons. Need another year or two from this truck and thats really more then I intended. Usually I buy used and keep them until 10years old and sell which would have been coming up. Realy don't want it rough running or smoking . I guess I was somewhat dissapointed in the mod's I already made,Use to sell and handle the installation of the Bank's stage 3 kits on later model's and was really impressed on how they ran. dissapointed in the VE pump issue. Oh well. Pier's suggested pod's but reading some of the previous comments has got me nervous if that's the correct word. Hate to make a 550. 00 mistake or headache, maybe I need shrink!:confused,

You could sell those injectors in a heartbeat for $50-$100 < than you paid to folks here is my guess.

So, you are covered for all but that $100 or so if you really don't like them.

I'm not sure if anyone has provided input on POD's where they have a stock setting on their pump. I think everyone has them, and tweaked the pump as high as we can tolerate on the smoke. A stock pump and POD's might be a SWEET setup.

I'd actually be interested in seeing if anyone has used the PODs - or PWs - with a stock pump. With the emissions testing in AZ I'm hesitant to screw with the pump much... if at all. :(

Me Too!One of the comments on pods was not as smooth when reving engine and louder in general. The louder dosen'nt bother me but what's with not as smooth. Yet piers suggested the pod's with my truck but commented may want to go to a hx35 housing. I'm done with that issue as far as I'm concernd,Next for my truck is injectors once I decide and a tow/rv valve body for trans other the general maintance. The Bank's stuff thats already on it wasn'nt cheap,it left me stranded two states away with 3 horses on board, flex plate flew apart in middle of night and that cost me with a tci convertor 1800. 00 to repair and two all night drives as well as missed work. In another words the last 20,000 miles I've put out over 3,000 easily. not counting maintance. If i wanted to play with a car/truck money wize I want a old 454 chevelle!!

PW and stock pump

Dan,

I am running PW injectors in my truck with a stock injection pump. I am really happy with how smooth and clean the power is. Look at my signature to see the exact modifications. I tow quite a bit with my GN and don't like to see my truck smoke like an old Ford 6. 9. I got a good deal on some used injectors. The smoke is a real light haze at WOT. Idle smoke is a real light gray when the engine is cold, but clear when warmed up. I am only getting a max EGT of 1100*F on the preturbo pyro and 20 lb of boost. These injectors do put out a cloud of smoke if you get on it hard when the engine is only partially warmed up. With a 16 cm turbo housing there is no noticable turbo lag. I still have a stock automatic, so I want some extra power without tearing anything up. Hope this helps.
