Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Question on installing rear seal

I am replacing the clutch in my 96 truck. Thought I would replace the rear seal. My eingine does not have the bolt on crank seal housing. New Fel-Pro seal has steel installation tool with flange. I installed seal and recessed about 1/4" from rear crank surface, where flywheel bolts up. I am thinking it is ok, since rear crank flange appeared to be at least 3/4" thick. I drove seal in until flange on installer hit the adapter plate. did I install the seal correctly? Thanks.

As long as the seal is clear inside the housing/block bore its fine. I have never done one with the adapter housing in place nor have I done one that didn't have the little removable seal housing. On those I have done I drove the seal clear in until the outer flange of the installer ring hit the housing.

I ended up removing the adapter plate and found the seal housing. I removed the seal housing and could see that the crank flange is very wide and seal location was fine. Thanks for the input.

The Cummins installation tool is made such that you drive the seal on until the tool bottoms out on the crank. Sounds like your is very much the same and you did it correctly.
