The 'v' seal is simply a dust seal to keep the dirt and water away from the main seal. It goes against the shoulder of the yoke, and presses against the face of the main seal. The difference in the flanged seal and
the flush-mounted seal is the depth of the recess in the differential housing. The differentials that take the flanged seal have a greater depth. Supposedly the flanged seal is for the later models...post '99,
but on my '01 the flanged seal didn't quite seat all the way against the flange. I left it in anyway. it seems tight., and no leaks. The only problem is the 'v' seal is a bit crushed, but I'm not worried about it. If the main
seal starts leaking, I'll just put the flush seal in that also came with the kit. I don't anticipate any problems. Drove about 100 miles of two-track in Wyoming this week, including hauling a 1,500lb load, and dragging
a small camper, and no leaks.
While checking things over, what I thought was a leaking steering gear turned out to be a leaking power brake booster, so that's next on the agenda. The Dodge has 287,000+ miles on it, so things are starting to need work. This has been an incredible pickup, so I don't want to replace it, unless I find another '01 or '02 in cherry condition...ha! Thanks for the help, guys.
