tell us more about your boat: make, size and what differences between your engine and one in a pick up.
My boat is a 1978 34 ft Mainship... it has a "down east" style hull, which is a semi planing lobster boat style hull with a full keel. It is powered by a single diesel. Originally it had a 160 hp Perkins T6. 354 which is a 6 cyl, turbocharged and aftercooled engine.
I repowered in 99 with a new Cummins 270 hp Diamond performance series engine and a new transmission to handle the power.
Cummins refers to their recreationally rated engines as Diamonds... don't know why, real diamonds are less expensive!!
A recreational engine is rated the highest hp wise within a series... but you are limited in duty cycle to 1 out of 8 hours at max rpm (2600). Commercial is rated for more duty at max rpm, but they govern them at 2500, or 2400 to make up the difference... just a numbers game really.
Old engine got me a cruise speed of 9 knots, a max speed of 11 knots.
The Cummins gives me a cruise of up to 15 1/2 knots and a max of 18 +. This boat gets "squirrelly" at 16 knots, so I really can't use any more power. It's a hull design thing that really can't be changed. I usually run more around the 11-12 knt range anyway. Boat gets good economy there... 2000 rpm, running about 10-14 psi boost at that range... . they say keep it below 15 psi at cruise for max longevity.
Engine has a Bosch 7100 series pump and a "jacket water cooled" intercooler... an antifreeze cooled unit mounted on top of the intake manifold.
A gear driven sea water pump (for heat exchanging) is mounted where the p steering pump is on our engines. Exhaust manifold is antifreeze jacketed for cooling, turbo is jacketed, and there is a tubular heat exchanger mounted below the ex manifold.
Engine has a sea water tubular fuel cooler to insure top hp.
Exhaust is water cooled and 5 inch dia hose w/no muffler.
Oil capacity is 16 qts.
I added a boost gage (VDO via a transducer) and I'll add a pyro over the winter. I also have a S&B air filter. . similar to K&N, but built much stronger, and deeper pleats.
There are pics of the engine and boat in reader's rigs.
Sorry for the wordiness
