I have 61000 miles on my truck and the transmission seems to be making some noises when at slow speed and especially when I just put it into gear and coast with the clutch in. I thought I had U-Joint problems again but it wasn't. I think it might be the synchros wearing but not sure... .

The output shaft on the transfer case has a little wobble when I push and pull on it but it don't seem much..... Very minute

How long is the 6 speed supposed to last? And how much would it cost to rebuild the transmission and the transfercase?

It should last a lot longer than that! Try changing the oil in it, either Redline MTL or the Mopar stuff if you can afford it. Other than that, it might be the dreaded pilot bearing in the flywheel is bad. There is a better bearing available, but you have to have the flywheel machined to do it, that's what I'm doing on mine.

have:

Redline MTL in it already... ... .

South bend Con OFE Clutch... ... .

Amsoil ATF in the Transfercase

Any other ideas?

If you have an early '01 it is probably a waste to rebuild, mine was built in Fer. '00 and At 99000 I had a fifth gear syncro go bad. I had it replaced but was told it would be hard to get parts for. Next time there is a problem I will jsut get a new transmission.

My guess is a pilot bearing. To answer your questions;

- a very long time. The NV-5600 is very strong and very reliable. My best guess would be 250,000 - 500,000 miles depending on driver and duty.

- You'd have to get a quote, but my guess for a transmission and transfercase rebuild? $3,000 - $4,000.

When you changed the oil, were there any wear metals in the gear case?

I agree with Dave... . I've seen several with failed pilot bearings including my 04 with 100K... on the 3rd gen sight I posted photos of the failed clutch disc... and upgraded pilot bearing... . if this is the problem its allowing the disc to lock up off center to the center of the input shaft. . a vibration will result and later failure of the front bearings in your transmission...

We turn the flywheel and put in a real pilot bearing like whats used in a larger truck... .

I posted under 3rd gen, Clutch disc failure... . with photos and flywheel modifications or maybe flywheel pilot bearings... I did that last week.....

BTW - I tested the u-joints and didn't find a thing but when we pulled them down to grease them 2 were bad... . we just didn't pry hard enough on them... .

This is part of my post... .

On the Dodge we use a 6204-3/4-2RS bearing...

We machine the flywheel so that this new pilot bearing will press into the flywheel and give the true support needed to the input shaft of the NV5600 or other trans mission... .

IF I've done this right the first photo will be the bearing open with syn. grease that will go to at least 475*F before it starts to melt... this high end grease is the same grease I use in U-joints... it can't be washed away with a power washer..... we than pop the rubber shield back on the bearing and insert it into the flywheel... . see second photo.....
