Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) trans filter

I read about a fellow who installed a "Workhorse"

and said his mpg went up and egt's went down when

pulling a heavy trailer. I called Workhorse and the guy

said my stock 2002 3/4 ton would need model "2006". It is

supposed to add 80HP and 160lbs/ft torque. He said

it just causes the torque curve to drop to between

1700 and 2300 RPM by not blowing more fuel into the

engine but to atomize the fuel better which causes

lower egt's and better fuel economy. Also it

reduces the need to add intakes and bigger exhaust, I

was told. They sell out of Montana and say it is great

for pulling mountains. Which is what I plan on doing

with my 5th wheel (heavy).

Anyone had exerience or know about this?

I am new to this site and to diesels. Love my cummins!Oo.

Thanks for any of your inputs. Why does my truck profile

not showup???

Those are huge numbers. I would not take that seriously. Is it just a tube with a hi-flow filter attached to it, that we are talking about. At least that is what I've seen advertised in magazines. The last issue of TDR mag has a test results of few combinations of intakes/filters. The highest numbers were in the teens (for HP) gain. It is easy to make claims yet hard to back it up.

Not sure what ILIANBUG is talking about... . workhorse intake? I assume that you are talking bout some type of chip for your truck. Assuming that it does not tap the pump wire, which it probably doesn't... 60-70 hp seems to be the limit available. I am not sure how it would better atomize the fuel without changing the injectors b/c ours are mechanical unlike the newer trucks. Almost all the boxes of this type make their power by changing the timing and adjusting the fueling curves..... I am sure that this box is fine, but I would ask around more since I have no knowledge of it first hand.

Their is a new Tow box coming out made by quadzilla. Supposed to be the latest and greatest for us 2nd gen guys. It is adjustable on the fly unlike many others... ..... from stock to 70 hp with 4 settings... might be worth looking at, will be out end of the month.

Hey do what you want to there but I've had good and bad expeirence with the work horse.

I had one on my '03 and loved the power, not too much just enough, not much fuel mileage gain like they claim.

I tryed one on my '01 would not work after much messing around I said forget it.

I have one on my '06 but it didn't give me the power like it did for the '03 and was not really impressed, and now I have been having trouble with it missing on a pull, so I took it off and it cleared right up. So I'm runnin with it off now.

I don't want to go into a lot of details but I had some customer service trouble too.

Would rather see you go with a Banks, Edge, TST, Bully Dog etc...

Good Luck!!!!!!!!

My Dad has (had) one on his 04. 5, no impressed. It will blow black smoke now but the power feels the same. All he does is tow his fiver with it. He did not have gauges when he had the box on but does now, he just does not want to bother putting the box back on. As for the mileage claims, no improvement seen.

You would be better off with an Edge EZ.

James Thomas, yeah, you do not know what I am talking about. Of course. Workhorse intake is advertised in all of the diesel magazines, it's an oil-free element.

Ace476, I'm sorry, I thought you were mentioning that particular item. I hope all works well.

from what I understand the workhorse is a chip/box type add on and is similar in function to MSDs in a gasser in that it will use multiple injections per event. I have never used one. For all around driving/towing I love my SMARTY. solid power you can use AND feel. very reliable. adjustable, and undetectable by dealer!

I too have a Smarty. I love it, the HP and TQ are great. MPG went up 1-2, I live at 7000 feet and it pulls the hills great. It is a real kick at lower elevations. The smarty is not the cheapest thing out there but worth every penny in my book.
