Hi All,

Brand new for the second time. Totaled my '99 and trailer in '05 and just getting back in the groove with a cherry red '14 3500 DRW laramie and am getting a slide in camper.

Silly little question; how much weight will one of the floor boxes in the back seat foot well hold safely? Like a air/hydraulic bottle jack.

Thanks,

Old Eagle

Welcome to TDR.

Good question. I don't honestly know if I have ever seen a weight limit for those boxes posted here.

The only thing that I use mine for is as a small cooler when I'm on the road. I throw some ice in there an it keeps a few bottles of water cold for the day.

I wish I had those storage compartments. Megacab's don't come with them. :(

It's hard to say how strong those thin plastic compartments are. Looks like the tabs on top are the weak point. Also, would they deform with a heavy bottle jack stored in there?

I guess the best way to find out is to try it. It might work OK if you cut a piece of wood to fit in the bottom and the tabs don't break.

I would think they're as strong as needed for anything you could fit in that relative small area. Since I have a MC and don't have the compartment to look at, have you gone under yours to verify it's plastic and not sheet metal with just a plastic insert in the cab?

I would think if the compartment was strong enough to be full of beverages/ice and tools it could hold a bottle jack. Not sure about you, but my bottle jack doesn't way more than a few pounds, 5 or 6 at the most.

My thoughts were that there's a lot of difference in a bottle jack bouncing around in that compartment vs. a few cans of pop or water, or a few wrenches.....

My bottle jack is rated for 20 ton lift and rides in my bed mounted toolbox (and weighs considerably more than 6 lbs). That way if it leaks, it is not in the cab. I do have select breaker bars and sockets in the rear under-seat storage along with a general assortment of crap.

I carry tow chains in mine and tow straps in the other. The chains weigh around 15 pounds I would guess. Haven't lost them yet to gravity.
