Here in Missouri(St. Louis), I had the option to pick up a 2000 Pontiac Firehawk

that had a salvage title for a great price. Nothing wrong with the vehicle.

Completely rebuilt. Many new parts.

I called the Highway Patrol to find out what I would have to do to get it titled

in my name. The officer on the phone told me it would not be worth my time.

He said that the rebuilders would have to have every receipt for the parts replaced(in this case, a guy at his house who bought it junked). If I could get all the receipts together, I would have to have it towed to the local Highway patrol office to be officially inspected and all the receipts verified. (don't remember how much time it would take).

I really didn't know if this car would survive under a microscopic inspection.

Now this was about 10 years ago and I'm not sure of all the details (or don't remember anymore) but it sure didn't seem worth 1500-2000 savings.

Must have something mixed up. You tried to buy a 2000 car 10 years ago... so in 1997?

Ya know, someday I'm going to replace this brain with the newer model...
2002 actually means 5 years! I doubt I could even get a Salvage title for my current brain. :(

I would probably stay away from a salvage title just because of the unknown. However, it goes both ways. I have an old (beautiful condition 1983 BMW) which an uninsured motorist smashed into the front fender. My wonderful ex-insurance company (USAA) totalled the car because of its age alone. I fixed it to new condition and while I was in the shop, I saw a brand new BMW being cut in half at the windshield and getting $38k worth of repairs. The difference was that my car got the salvage title and the chopped bimmer got a clean registration because the insurance company chose to fix it.

with the truck already registered and on the road it should be a simple transfer of ownership, most of my vehicles have been salvage (i work at a salvage yard/dealer/shop) and i have been first hand on the title crap, around here you take the car to the local police dept and ask for a physical inspection, cop comes out with a ticket sized form and looks at the paper work for the car and fills out some crap on the form then looks at the vin on the dash and maybe the one on the door post (depends on the cop) fills out a little more on the form and wishes you a good day, it takes like 5 minutes and i've done maybe a dozen for the shop and a few for me (for the shop for me) but every state is different, my advise is if the public notary's in your area are online with the dmv and can give you a tag (ours are and it's great, with online license renewal i haven't been in a dmv in maybe 6-7 years :) despite a few car transfers) they can answer any questions you have without the fun of dealing with a government choad

I dont know how california does it but Kansas the process is the same as WDixon27, simple inspection and your on the road. I rebuild vehicles for a living and i wouldnt hesitate to buy salvage. Just be cautious and look the vehicle over very well, ask what was repaired and make sure it was repaired correctly. dresslered made a good point with his bemmer, ive seen vehicles in auctions that should not be repaired and put back on the road that have clean titles, and minor fender and headlight damage but have a salvage title.

It all depends on the vehicle and the repairs that were done. Obviously the truck is fairly decent its already been on the road for a few years, I say go for it. Just check it out if you find a lot of bailing wire, zip ties and a door full of body filler move on.

i bought my 99 3500 used with salvage title. i looked it over and it was all repaired. it was already titled so he signed over the title, i paid him and i went to the DMV to finalize the transfer. simple, just like any other sale.

as for getting salvaged removed, i looked it up myself after buying it and found that you needed all the receipts and documentation that it was properly repaired. wasnt worth the effort. insurance company doesnt care that it was salvaged, only that they wont cover any existing damage. so i will be getting it inspected and documented for them in case i do have an accident, then i can get coverage for it all.
