Questions on changing AT filter and fluid?

Hey folks,

Thinking about swapping out my stock transmission pan for the new deep dish Mag-Htek pan and hoping for a few hints for this technically challenged guy?

1) Any tips on draining pan to avoid dumping the fluid on myself?

2) Any tips on changing the AT filter for us technically challenged? It looks like it has only 3 screws or bolts to remove.

3) Anyone have any problems/tips installing the Mag-Htek pans?

4) Hints on filling transmission?

5) Lost the web address that was posted for directions on tightening AT bands on the Dodge. Anyone have it handy?

^^^^^Wait untill it is cool or you will feel like a french fry. Have a large piece of cardboard under the truck. Leave 2 or 3 pan bolts loose on one side of the pan When you break the pan loose from the transmission. Have lots of rags and oil dry ready. You will need a drain pan that will fit side to side and from rear third of engine to rear of transfer case. The fluid will come, spelled squirt, out the 3 sides with out the bolts and splash over everthing. Then hold the pan up and remove the last couple of bolts and drain pan into bucket. Remove the 3 bolts holding the filter on and install the filter spacer block ( if using the deep pan )and new filter. During this proceedure it will be raining atf like cats and dogs from the valve body and inside the transmission case. You will have softer skin than you wife/ g-friend after the oil bath. The MHT pan has a drain plug so you will never have to take the atf bath again.


3) Anyone have any problems/tips installing the Mag-Htek pans?

^^^^^^NO. lube the O rings and make sure you torque the bolts.

4) Hints on filling transmission?

^^^^^^use a funnel with a flexible spout, the dipstick tube is darn near horizontal.

5) Lost the web address that was posted for directions on tightening AT bands on the Dodge. Anyone have it handy?

JNutter has given good directions. The one thing I can add is if you don't have a big drain pan, what works real well is the lid off one of the big 50 gallon trash cans that you can get at Wal-Mart. Just punch a couple of holes in the center of the lid, and place it on top of your drain pan. It's large enough that it'll catch most, if not all, the fluid and it'll drain through the few holes in the center into your drain pan. Might be a good time to switch to synthetic transmission fluid. take your time--if you hurry you'll have a mess-a big one-like jnutter said--i did what jnutter describes except i cracked all the bolts and then loosened the front(towards engine) 3 a little more and more and more and more, as the draining ebbed & flowed--you'll still need a large drain pan--i used 3-2 gal. buckets and it wasn't too bad, just use some ground cover--take yout time---chris

If your going to change on a regular basis then go down to your wal-mart and pick up one of those 15 quart drain pans and a round saucer (the one the kids use to slide down the hills in the winter) drill a hole in the saucer, place it on top of the drain pan, follow everyone elses advise and you will have no mess or problems. Ron

ops i see your from CA maybe you cann't get the saucer there, well you get our meaning, by the way the 15 quart drain pan works nice for engine oil changes too.

And, front band adj. , loosen lock nut, tighten adj, to 72 INCH pounds, back off 1-7/8 turns and lock down. Rear band. Loosen lock nut tighten to 72 INCH pounds, back off 3 turns, lock down. The manual says the adj. screw is 5/16 but best I remember it is a torx head and the screws holding the filter are torx screws too. It took about 6 quarts when I did mine but you will need some more with the deeper pan. In addition to the soft hands, you wont need any hail balm for a few days either. Have fun. bg
