2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Questions on the front end

I have an 02 2x4 with 120K on it. It has been trouble free except the vp44 & lift pump problems.

I still have the original brakes with the fronts having about 40% remaining and the rears about 60% remaining. I was looking at the front suspension and it appears the ball joints are riveted to the "A" arms. Is it necessary to change the "A" arms to replace these wear parts? Also how long should the wheel bearings last? I read it is suggested they be serviced or replaced when brakes are done but that will be at about 180K for me.

The ball joint rivits have to be either ground out or chisled. I do them with an air chisle and grinder after to smooth everything out. the new ones should be bolt on.

as for wheel bearings 180K is allot of miles to not have at least checked them.

I would imagine the bearings need to be repacked with some new grease at the least right now. repacking is not too big a job just a little dirty. If there is minimal play in the bearings you should be ok, but personally with milage comes wear and bearings arent too expensive. not to scare anyone but a wheel bearing failing and coming apart could become a disaster.

I thought on the 98 or 99 and up the front wheel bearings are not serviceable. Supposed to be part of the hub. There is no dust cap on mine and no cotter key, just a big nut looks like a nylon nut.

I have a 98. 5 2wd. done the wheel brgs. many times in the 390000kms. simple job just like a car. you will need a new seal. I have had 2 bearings go bad, makes lots of noise. I have done the upper ball joints with Moog with grease fittings. I installed grease fittings in the oems and they lasted for 295000kms. the lowers are still originals. 2wd dont have the front end problems of the 4wd. hope this helps. and Merry Christmas to all from Canada.
