I have a new-to-me '92 with A518.
Now I'm trying to figure out what I've got with regard to trans cooling.
The A518 trans rear cooling pipe is connected to a 4"x12" cooler on the driver's side over the intercooler. It comes out of there back along the driver's side of the Cummins, around the back of it to the passenger's side, then up into a cylindrical heat exchanger of some kind. Out of that, it returns to the front pipe connection on the A518.
The cylindrical thing also has pipes out of each end that appear to connect to the water pump area, tee-ing off the connection to the heater.
Q1: Which is the direction of flow? Out of the rear of the A518 or out of the front of the A518?
Q2: What's the purpose of the cylindrical "exchanger"? Is it really cooled/warmed by the engine coolant?
Q3: I've heard of fan-assisted, under-the-bed installed additional coolers. I tow a 8500# 5er; the A518 heats up some on a 6% 5-mile grade. Which cooler is this folks talk about and how is it best coupled into the cooling line(s)?
Tx in advance for any help.

DBF,
Q1, the front line is the output going up to the oil cooler located in the upper right hand corner in front of the inner cooler.
Q2, yes this is another oil cooler for the transmission. The engine coolant is going in the front of this unit coming out the back and goes back into the engine.
Q3, Dodge offered a super duty transmission oil cooler package that mounted up under the truck bed on the drivers side. The pn is 82400846 or 82400994. I installed one on my 92 5 or 6 years ago and have had no problems with it. The kit is very complete and comes with a good set of instructions.

That's what I was looking for, GeneH.
Thanks much.
Just to give you some feedback, the part number 82400846 has been changed to 82400994. There are still ten of the things in the system, cost is $367. 84.
Kinda high, thinking about it.

Thanks very much for your work in helping me find this cooler & a good price, Gene.
For your info, when you first told me of this cooler kit, there were still ten of them in stock at the Chicago warehouse for Dodge.
Yesterday, there were eight in stock. Mine is on order, that leaves seven available as of 7/10/2000.
