Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Quick 53 block ?, I promise

I am supposed to go look at a used 70k mile 98. 5 5-speed tomorrow, but if they ALL came with the 53 block, I won't bother. Did all early engines have these? I can't seem to piece together an answer from previous threads.

No not all '98. 5's came with 53 blocks. I have heard of many on here with that year that got lucky, mine included. On mine and the others that I have heard about on here with out a 53 in that year, have no casting number at all where the 53 usually is, instead a row of smaller numbers just above the spot where the casting number is on most. Go look at it anyway, if it isn't a 53... . buy her... . what's better than one CTD, TWO of them!!! Good Luck
