Providing this is not somthing that will require a trip to the dealer, I will be buying a 95' Ram 2500 12v this week.

When you start it cold, you wait for the light to go out, turn key to start, once it fires you let off the start position and it will imediatly die as if someone shut the key off. The only way to get it to fire and stay running is to hold the key for like 10 seconds in the start position once the engine starts. This cannot be safe for the starter. It only does this when it is cold, once the engine is 100% warmed up, it will always start fine.

This appears to be an electrical problem not related to the ignition switch. But more a heat or fuel solenoid issue.

Any idea's, I would hate to get stuck with a major problem.

I would suggest having someone else try to start it and put your finger on the shutdown solenoid. If the solenoid falls back down when they let the key back to the run position, it is something in the hold up circuit.

Try starting it with a little pedal and then see if it will keep running if you don't let off the pedal. If that is the case, the idle is too low. It should start almost instantly without waiting for the the wait to start light to go out if you give it a little pedal.

If it tries to die even with a little pedal then you probably have an air leak somewhere so it is loosing it's prime a little.

Email me at -- email address removed -- for my write up on the 12 valve fuel supply system, how it works and how to fix it.

My cousin's '97 has done this a bunch on several different occasions. We replaced the relay but if I remember right it still did the same thing some after that. I think the main problem is a dirty solenoid. He has been running it without the boot for a long time now because he is too lazy to buy one. Anyway it was doing the same thing a bunch just lately and he just gave the solenoid a shot of WD40 and it's working again so I would suggest you check that out. Like the first poster suggested just have someone hold the solenoid up or wire it up to give it a test.
