How do you check the timing?!

I was at the dealer getting the first service done on my 3500 today and because I had done a heavy hauling job for a friend a couple of weeks ago (with no transmission temp guage) and it was hot outside, and I was not in haul mode lots of the time (another mistake?) I asked them to also change the transmission fluid just to be safe. They ended up flushing it too and of course I got a big bill for that part. Is that what is normally done instead of just draining and refilling the transmission? It was ok to do it I guess but was this an overkill?

When they flush it they are also getting the old fluid out of the torque converter. Be glad the did it.

Really kind of depends on how many miles are on the transmission and how hard it worked in those miles. Id say you did a good thing by flushing the system rather than just changing the oil. When it comes to oil, rarely is there a thing called "going overkill" IMO. :D
