Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Quick Question on block heaters...

Is there a maximum time limit for keeping the block heater plugged in for? I left mine plugged in for all day yesterday and never used the truck. Other than using electricity is this ok? I would assume it is ok to start it first and then unplug correct?

The heater element. is a filament that has a life span. The constant power flowing can over heat the connections and can shorten the life of heater. I plug mine in 2hrs before I need to leave,longer if its colder.

Our loader tractor that we load one ton hay bales with gets used about 10 minutes a day and shut back off. It spends the rest of the time plugged in. It costs about $1. 50 a day to run the heater with our "cheap" electricity. You should unplug the heater before starting the engine though. The vibations of the engine will eventually cause the element to fail. When the element is hot it's much more suseptable to the vibrations. Jake
