I have to pull the cam out of my '97, can I clothespin the lifters/tappets through the side cover on the engine to hold them up instead of using 1/2" wooden dowls through the pushrod holes? The injection pump is off too so that is out of the way. Thanks in advance. -Tom

Tcolesanti,

Yes you can, I did mine that way except I pulled the lifters up and put a small clamp around the lifter so I knew that there was no way the lifters could drop. The stick and rubber band method scares me to no end if you drop one. One thing tho. When you put the push rod cover back on, GET A NEW GASKET AND CLEAN THE SURFACE AREA REAL, REAL GOOD!. Use a real THIN layer of gasket sealer on both sides. Make sure it will stay plyable over time also. I didn't and mine leaks some and to change the gasket I have to strip the left side of the engine to do it.

When are you going to do the cam? I have made a tappet lifter and holder just for this purpose but I need to finish the project.

I lied a little, I am only pulling the cam, because I was too lazy/not enough time/too stupid/fill in the blank, because the KDP dropped and took out my timing gear housing. I am going to be fixing this thing today and tomorrow, its already most of the way apart and I will have a service manual today to make my life a little easier. Thanks for the advice guys.

Tcolesanti,

Sorry about your kdp :{ Several of us have been there :{ :{ But, Your not quick enough to think that you can pull something over our eyes and think that we didn't know it wasn't your kdp. Just you saying "I have to" gave it away. :-laf :-laf

use a wooden dowl to hold them up, then while they are held up, put a small hose clamp that will fit over the body of the tappet, and clamp down on the tappet just enough for it to be held up. works great if you have the tappet cover off.

Guys, I used some decent sized Zip-Ties, I held the tappets up with a magnet and zip tied them, then moved to the next one, worked great.

I just had'nt figured out what to say if you guys had asked what cam I was going to put in it... ... ... ... ... . :-laf

My truck is apart right now also, with the KDP being the cause. I used twelve extension magnets to hold the lifters up, worked great, I tried the dowels and they didnt feel right so I went with the magnets. Oh and dont forget to remove the lift pump, we were like "what the heck is holding the cam in?", then it dawned on me the lobe for the lift pump, and all is well now.

Also, if your getting a new "updated" timing case, then you also need the dowel pin, dont worry it cant fall out with the updated case. The pin goes in before installing the case. I forgot about the pin in the mad aggrivation rush, and didnt install one b-4 we had already installed the cam with the case in place. I used a drill and opened up the hole where the dowel goes, then I machined a dowel pin of my own that is long enough that when the cover is on then it can't move, plus I staked it.

Boy, I wish I had gotten off my butt sooner to get my tappet handles fixed. With them you just put it down the push rod hole after they are removed and tighten it and it will not let your tappet fall if an atom bomb fell on your house. But sometimes, procrastination is the only thing I can find time for. :-laf
