Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Turbo elbow larger?

The turbo on my 94 I just bought has no detectable side to side put quite a bit of front to back movement. It doesn't look like it could possibly come close to rubbing anything. I looked up the specs and saw that end play was bad. My question is why is end play bad and should I just keep running it till it wears out? It is also very quiet even with the silencer ring gone. This is the top truck in the sig. It has a k and n drop in and i noticed some black gunk caked to the front opening and turbine, probably cooked on oil from the k and n. what do you think?

I also noticed a little play in mine with no thrust play so I went by the turbo shop expecting to be told I needed a turbo. He explained to me that it is a "full floating" bearing and when there is no oil pressure to the bearings you will be able to push the shaft side-to-side. The shaft rides on a film of oil between it and the bearing and then the bearing rides on a film of oil between it and the housing. He said as long as you can't push it far enough for the wheel to contact the housing and as long as your not getting any oil leaking your OK.
