I soundproofed my 2001 4wd quad cab Diesel today. I used 3# to the sq. ft. lead sheeting. put it on the valve cover, under all the the floor carpet, then used some foam pieces to cover all the open spots on the firewall including around the steering shaft under the hood and under the dash,on the panel behind the back seat, and in the rear corners of the cab. Also put a strip of foam on the cowl right behind the rubber seal so the hood sits on it,also put foam down between the front of the doors and fender. It is a completly different truck, the only noise now is the injection pump and even that is very muffled,i could eliminate the injection pump sound with some lead sheeting also but i dont know if i dare do it,maybe the pump would run too warm although there is a lot of fuel being circulating through the system to keep it cool, i might do it and keep a close eye on it to see how warm it gets. I may put a thermometer on the pump and see what it runs at when its hot outside then cover it and see if it does run hotter. I didnt take any db readings before or after but i know i cut the noise down by at least half , probably a lot more according to my wife, and she knows.

Yelloweyes? Had a liver checkup? I suppose your hood came with insulation. Mine did not. Chevies do. Hmmmmm. I will start with hood insulation. Not too much, as my wife may want more rides. JUST KIDDING HONEY. Heh heh.

Lsfarm has done tons of research and experimenting which I also took advantage of when I added sound proofing to my truck. Look under 'noise reduction' for sources of materials, web sites, and lots of good first hand knowledge. Greg is happy to talk in person.

"Lsfarm" is his user handle, real name, Greg. one of our brothers in the GLTDR. His mission is at polar opposites to mine, :D I'm out to rattle windows and pump up the volume, and he's out to preserve his hearing so he doesn't end up like me. :D

Cummins Corvette, got the lead sheeting in 24 in. wide rolls 7 ft long at CMS Metals Regina Sask. Canada. Cost . 75 cents a pound.

Lsfarm??

My handle is from my home and last name: L ong 'S Farm. See photo below.

I'm a self proclaimed Noise Nazi. Since I have to take a hearing test every six months for my job, I like to keep the cumulative damage to my hearing to a minimum.

At Muncie a Cummins Rep had a 2003 engine in a ~2000 truck. My noise reduction efforts on my truck place it about halfway between stock and the new 'Whisper Cummins'.

A HUGE decrease in crankcase and oil pan noise due to a redesign of the engine block, making it much stiffer which stops the oil pan and block skirt from 'ringing like a bell' from each cylinder firing. [Quote from Cummins rep. ]

Believe it or not, I don't like the lack of 'Cummins Chuckle' in the new 2003 engine. I would still like to get my truck a bit quieter though.

Hey, nice place Lsfarm. Got one like that. Love it. I see the superfoam name in your signature. Tell me what you have done to quiet the beast. Hoodless in Seattle (well, one hour north) George

What is the adhesive to use on the oil pan covering. Has there been a good response to doing this fix. It is a little loud at the lights , and worse when a vechicle pulls along side.

Noise Reduction and Glue

I bought the spray-on high temp contact cement from GSI when I bought some of the 'superfoam' The foam is actually their 1/2" laminated sound block foam. If you pm or email me, when I get back home I'll try to find the can and see if there is some additional info about this high temp cement.

Look GSI up at www.soundstop.com ask for Don, he gives TDR members a 15% discount.

For a lot more info do a search for noise reduction there are two threads on the 24v and one on the 12v. The latest one on the 24v forum has a lot of photos and info.

Lead on the oil pan and a layer of 'superfoam' over the lead dropped the under truck noise level by about 8dB. That's a big difference. Wheelwell reading dropped from 91dB to 88dB.

Check out the other threads, and pm or email me if you wish to have more info or to call me.

Did You Read?

George [geusterman] did you read the Noise Reduction thread that has moved up to the top with the latest updates?

If you want some more info, email me, and I will send some more photos and text on my noise reduction efforts.

The only problem I have with my truck's (sweet) noise is when I pull up to the drive-through window at a local fat-food establishment. They usually set their speaker about level with my exhaust pipe. I hate shutting the truck off, so I usually have to yell. And tell them to move their speaker up.

The engine sound does however make me sleepy sometimes. I think that comes from when I was a little baby. I guess I never slept, so occasionally my gramps would have to take me up in his International semi tractor, start it up, and just let it idle. That would put me right to sleep. And that truck had a supercharged Cummins engine in it!:D :D

Oo. BlakeOo.

Yes, good heavens, I read all that last night. Incredible. What we endure for a Cummins. I was thinking of Rhino lining the inside tub, doors and hood. What would be your thoughts at this point on that? George Eusterman

I love the sound of this beast! I may add the behind the rear seat padding on the wall but the thing under the hood is why I purchased it. I sometimes roll down just the passenger side window to listen to the sound bounce of the "gay-mobiles" next to me in traffic..... I was in San Francisco just yesterday :-laf ... my wife tells me I'm being a punk if I enjoy annoying people... . you know. . no one in Montana seems to mind:D

I LOVE this truck!

William

Hey William. Old Montana boy here. Went through my Marine Corp induction in Butte in 68. Our trucks are louder than my piped Mountain Max. Which is illegal. We will be too one day, just watch.

I was cruising through Texas last month in my 93 8. 3 throttle plated Cummins/6spd Allison Motorhome with straight pipe and black smoke and 400hp. Oh yeah. Smoke sometimes embarrassing. It could fill up a Volvo wagon in one second.

Anyhow, stopped at this cool Cowboy Church on the freeway for Sunday services and pastor was talking about this Dodge someone gave him that always broke down. (Must have been a gasser). Anyhow, the staff at the supermarket would come out when he left to see if it started or not. They could bring the ice cream back in. He would get an ovation if it started. His wife refused to ride in it anymore because she could not get home. He told a couple of old boys about the fact she would not ride in it and their response "How much you want for it?" Har Har.

You are right. Nobody cares in Montana. George Eusterman
