Hi all. I'm a new member. I am switching from the 96 CC 4wd 2500 V10 AT w/ 120K to a 2000 3500 QC Dually 4wd 5spd and Cummins. My truck is my office and I'm one of the few that get's paid to drive it. That brings me to the subject heading. I'm a Repo man. My trucks have hidden hydraulic lifts that come out from under the beds and pick up cars by the tires. The V10 was quiet but the Cummins which I love is a little louder backing up a driveway @ 2am. I've read about noise blankets in the archives and am checking into these. I've been told of a valve cover supposedly filled with oil in a double wall that would quieten the valvetrain some. I can't find any evidence of this though. I like the noise when running but I'd like the idle noise as low as I can get for the obvious reasons.

Though another topic perhaps, Can anyone tell me about using a US Gear Exhaust brake ? I'm familiar with the Jake brake Valve retarder, I haven't had any contact with exhaust type brakes.

Any tips or advice appreciated. I owned a auto shop till last year and do all my own work on my vehicles. I'm glad to be a member and have gotten a lot of information from your archives.

Advanced Thermal Products

ATP is a company in Orange County SoCal that makes the valve cover insulator, ex manifold cover, and hood liner. I run their hood liner without the sound proofing cause I dig the looks.

Here's the turbo blankey-

lenny1, welcome aboard, as much as i love the sound of the cummins, im not exactly sure it would be my choice if i was trying to sneak up on cars and snatch them up at 2 in the morn. but hey add some bombs to it, and as soon as you get the car hooked up noone will be able to catch ya:eek: there are some blankets out that are supposed to help quiet the motor. i believe there is a blanket that wraps around the pan, and one that goes on the valve cover. I think there was also a blanket for under the hood to help out. if i remeber i think there was an article in one of the past tdr's about them. maybe someone else can chime in with the name of the company that makes them. Im sure they help, im just not sure if they will help enough in your situation. good luck

edit. HVAC snuck in there with the name of the company while i was typing. I knew i had seen a truck around here with the hood blanket.

Rubber Richard

Hey man, don't be surprised if I come up with the trick stuff :) Been doin' it for longer then any of my ISB brothers.

I saw you at B... ... ... ..... 's today Rubber Richard, you was a gittin' yur Rammy cleaned up.

BTW, that dually is mine now. Did the deal this afternoon. After we rebuilt it at B... ... 's she's ready to rock:D Cocked, locked, and ready to ROCK!!! Hmmmmmmm, I might install a stage III injector in #1 only:) Will my egt be to high??? How 'bout stage III injectors in all the odd cylinders:G I'm leavin' it stock! (Till morning)

Ive heard guys say the oil pan blanket was the best for sound reduction followed by the rocker cover.

I would do both and see what happens. Actually if you dont get around to it sooner than about a month, I will let you know how they work for me. I have been wanting to calm mine down a tad too.

Dude, i cant even believe you drove it off the lot without even hooking up an ez. :p now since you got that old man truck with the training wheels on it, are you gonna start hanging out in the towing hauling forum;) ;)

Lenny1-Thats A Dangerous Job !

A partner of mine used to repo cars. Some of his stories would scare the other cops to death. :D Be careful out there ;) If it were me I would be driving an electric tow truck. :D :D :D

lenny1:

Several years ago I used to do some repo work. We used the F**d diesels with dynamics. Put a fuel treatment in it and this should quiet it down a little. I use Standyne and can tell a difference in noise however haven't seen a difference in MPG or power.

I watched a guy in Houston Texas Repo a car a couple years back. He backed up to the car, hooked a big hook around the front axle and then drug the car across a parking lot (about 1/4 mile), then hooked to it with his lift. The only reason I watched was the noise when he starting dragging the car across the parking lot at 40 mph. Exciting work if you can stand the danger.

HVAC - did I read correctly, you have another truck??? I assume the enging is coming out and being sent to DD for the cam shaft and P pump??

Acquired Tow Vehicle

You are correct Sir(JR2)! Well sorta :)

I bought a "99 dually in nice shape for a daily driver. This will be the tow rig for the summer.

In the mean time Willyslover's motor from "OL' #1" is going to the gym to start a strength and conditioning program after which time we will transplant it into the "Rocket". The introduction of a new cam will likely happen with the advent of the new motor.

I have a set of heads here that are shipping out for port work soon. The ported head will be the last experiment before the motor change. Lawrence and I discussed the porting/cam issue. I have some other ideas too. Actually, I have a lot of ideas, problem is implementing them (time & money):(
