WOW. I bet someone lost there job with that one. I wonder how many C16's went out with a C15 crank???

If it was a Reman, it was probably assembled in Mexico... .

Not in this case. My TEPS coordinator was involved in every aspect of this and I saw him today, got the rest of the details.

Once the error was discovered Reman only wanted to authorize a crankshaft change. My guy refused and asked what damage the raw fuel did to the kits as the piston was down so far that fuel was spraying anywhere it wanted in there. He figured correctly that it washed down the walls.

Once he proposed that scenario Reman authorized a short block for a proper repair.

Then the talk turned to "How did this get through the line"?????

The Reman engines are test run and dialed in. This engine was hooked up in the chamber, exhaust is vented outside of course. Motor started, built oil pressure. Then they dial in the fuel for the selected horsepower. They got fuel enough for it to reach 600hp. No one could see the black cloud that had to have been hanging outside of the plant.

Rubber stamped it and shipped it out.

Now that we have it together it has to be driven to the Cat Dyno facility in Mass. to be re-calibrated because right now with the correct crank and the extreme fuel rate dialed into it we figure it is pushing 800hp at the very least. ;) Woo Hoo, don't let the customer drive it yet!!!!

hhmmm... its interesting that they actually fire up and dyno every Reman engine... yet only about 1 in 10 new engines in that family on the assembly line gets dynoed...

The long blocks arent dynoed... simply spin tested to ensure oil pressure and cylinder pressure... Wonder why they need to run them to get the hp right... as long as the dealer installs the proper FLS and FTS for that s/n... along with the proper rating #... it should have no issue making the rated hp and torque curve without overfueling??. . Maybe you truck guys ECMS are different??

As an OEM, can y'all flash and do re-rates?

We can flash, but I think for EPA reasons the certification has to be redone on a dyno to be legal in this case. I think that would be the difference between an on highway engine as opposed to off highway. It has to be compliant for the year range it falls in so CAT has to do it where it was sold as a complete engine.

This is a very rare instance so anything can happen...
