I have an 04 3500 td/ho srw with 2800 miles. Periodically it has a problem finding overdrive when not loaded on a flat, or decline. It seems to want to shift but engages back into 3rd. until higher r's are achieved. If you have a load, put your boot into it, or climb a hill it seems to shift into o/d alot crisper, and solid. Is anyone else experiencing this shifting issue? Is it a problem? Or is the 48e designed to function this way.

Mine has 5000 miles now, and a couple of times it felt and sounded like it missed the OD or LU shift. It seemed like it was a lift foot shift, but then changed it's mind and down shifted. It still works better (fewer crashes) than my HP desktop computer, so I just keep on driving.

It sounds like you get stuck with a 45 MPH limit a lot. :)

Normally, it will wait until ~ 48 to shift so as to have 1500 RPM after the shift.

An engine speed of less than 1400 RPM is lugging, and the transmission will shift to a lower gear to avoid that, then will shift back up (without O/D).

Mine's been working that way (empty or towing) for the last 14. 5K miles.

Sounds like you 48RE acts just like mine. After driving mine for 23k I have finally figured out the one thing that I don't understand about this transmission... It happens like this. Driving along unloaded at a speed above 48-49 mph (so torque converter is locked) on a 4 lane hwy. When I slow down and turn (keeping the speed above 30mph) the transmission will shift to 3rd and upon acceleration lock the converter in 3rd. (Why it locks in 3rd with O/D on I do not know but it does) Makes for a very nice responsive peddle feel. Then when it is time to shift to 4th it will unlock the converter and shift to 4th at the same time. This causes the peddle to lose all responsiveness and feels like the transmission just slipped! Its not normal in my book to be accelerating and when the transmission shifts up a gear the rpm's of the engine increase! Depending on how I was accelerating out of the corner this may happen at around 46-47 mph so a second later the converter will lock in 4th!! First few times it did it I thought my transmission was done. Anyone else notice this with there 48RE?

My '01. 5 47RE auto did the exact same thing you described. I liked it. I would 'pay' to have that program installed into my '03 47RE. They're doing alot of experimenting with the programs it would seem. I also don't care for the transmission that learns my driving habits. My driving habits change by my mood or traffic conditions or where I'm driving. It seems like it's confused about when to shift alot. My '01. 5 was like it was in "tow mode" all the time even though it didn't have tow mode. I would prefer that over what I have now.
