Just a little warning for those of you headed to the woods this spring. My six year old daughter and I were working at Lake Sinclair (Georgia) Saturday afternoon. I noticed a large Raccoon walking slowly across the field toward us. I told my daughter to get in the truck. I introduced the 'coon to a rock when it looked like he wasn't going to change course. Since I didn't have a gun with me, I took refuge in the back of the truck #ad
. Finally the coon went over to our neighbors place and I heard the yelping screams of one of his dogs. When I returned to our cabin I called the Game Warden. He told me that based on my description, the coon was in the early stages of rabies. He said my neighbor had called and the coon had attacked one of his dogs and mauled the dogs foot pretty bad. The warden said that the problem is severe in the South this year with Foxes and Raccoons. The warning is that they appear to be almost tame as they approach you. No fear. It also takes a good bit to discourage them from coming closer. Warn your children if you are coming to the South for camping and hiking. And remember you gun. I should have had one with me. At least the Warden gave me the OK to shoot any approaching animals if it appears to be a threatening situation.
