I just read an article in a Fourwheeler magazine about semi trucks racing in Europe, and trying to see if there'd be any interest in the United States. They said that most use the 11. 1 ltr Detroit In-Line Six. They start with 375hp, and a few engine mods and it's up to 500+hp. If they adjust the turbo they can get upwards of 1000hp. 0-60 in 4 seconds, and this with a 12,000lb truck.

I have dreamed and prayed that this type of racing would come to the US... .

I don't like NASCAR all that much and find it pretty boring... but class-8 diesel truck racing would be a hoot to watch in person!

Europe is very 'diesel-centric'... something that the US is very slowly becoming thanks to advances in injection systems and therefore emissions/noise reduction.

Semi Racing

Sorry to say I forget the name, but there is a group in the Pacific NorthWest & Canada doing this on ovals. We saw them last summer, & it is a hoot! When they come out of turn 4 to start the race,it is the "Smoke Story" from hell! Unbelieveable! DK. :--)

There was quite a bit of tractor racing back in the early seventies? I saw a couple at Pocono. I think the track owners felt that the trucks were too rough on the tracks. Early on, it was kind of run what you brung. Saw one go over the wall. I hope he did not have a load to deliver on Monday. They soon got serious, and there were some pretty highly modified rigs pushing an easy 1000HP. The startup was really neat. So much black smoke the field was obscured. It was exciting to watch too. Some good racing for sure.

I remember watching the Smoky and the Badit movies, and they showed some truck racing in the start of the movie. I think it was the second one, because "The Snowman" won the race.

The first big truck race on a Nascar track was at Atlanta, GA . I was there and I think it was 1980 or 81. Before the race they filmed the beginning of a Smokey and the Bandit film by letting Jerry Reed lead the field around the track and they asked everyone to stand up and cheer like he was winning. He was just learning to drive a truck and was alittle rough on the gears.

Alot of the trucks in the race were right off the street, some even had dropped a trailer in the parking lot. They had alot of right front tire trouble and a few blowouts that hit the wall. I think the pole speed was about 112mph and seeing those trucks go around Atlanta Speedway at 100 plus in a pack was awesome.

Hearing a Jake Brake coming down pit row was interesitng.

It was a great race and I wish I had a tape of it.

A truck with a Cummins won.
