Wheel locks useless now?

Wal-Mart Super Tech oil filter - anyone?

First post be gentle. I've been doing some research and couldn't find what I was looking for. I am thinking about installing the Racor 660(2 micron) on my new '05 and was wondering if anybody had done so already. If so what were the results? I am also curious if the new pusher style pump will handle a 2 micron filter without dying a quick painful death. Any feedback would be great.

I was also looking at a aftermarket filtering system. I was going to combine it with a FASS fuel pump. I was looking at the turbine model Racor, but I did not l;ike the max psi of 15. The C - series looks good but I'm afread of hoe much they cost.

racor filters

I have an 05 also and would like to install a racor also ,I have not got there yet but have one on my boat and 93 dodge they are the best I will look into it

I have installed an AirDog with a 2 or 3 micron filter/water separator and eliminated the Dodge in tank pump. Between the tank and the AirDog unit I mounted a 12 micron fuel filter/water separator from Napa. Very clean and easy to service.

Looks like there is some genuine interest from the 05 guys. I was looking for something that left the stock in tank pump in place and just added an extra 2 or 3 micron/ with seporator after that. The reason I am looking for that specifically is warranty consideration. If all you do is add a filter after the pump I would think the worst they could do is deny warranty on the in tank pump. Does anybody know the manufacturer or have a P/N for the new pump?

I too am interested in 2 micron filtration

Could adding a better filtration system to save the stock fuel system void the the warranty? I guess anything is possible, but we would be doing what DC should be doing.

For the little I know so far I like Air Dog and would look at Racor if they have something comparable.

Are there either of these systems ready for installation on the 05 models?

Thanks

Because the pump is going to have to work harder to push through an additional filter, I'd say the answer to your question is yes.

That is a matter of opinion that you'd have to take up with your dealer I suppose.

I have a RACOR 690 on my 2002 and the OEM lp sucks through it just fine. I would think a pusher would push through it just fine, but that is only an opinion based on my OEM lp sucking through it ( have light bombs). I have about 50k on this system: RACOR 690 with T(10 micron) filter, OEM lp on frame, AN-6 lines to OEM ff, AN-6 lines to VP. Pre & post fp.

This is only an uneducated guess, but I'd bet that stock in-tank pump could push through a 2-micron filter. Especially if you mount it close to the tank.

If it were me, I'd test it out first by teeing into the stock fuel line and installing a fuel pressure gauge (before the OEM filter, back near the tank). Spend a couple weeks monitoring the pressures the in-tank pump puts out, then install your secondary filter and see what happens to the pressure.

That's what I'd do... but I sort of have a "tendency" toward elaborate experiments and over-engineering. Or so I've been told. ;)

DCobb - I'm not sure how the pressure is from the 05 in tank lift pump - but if it is anything like the pressures of the 03-04. 5 lift pump, I would recommend against the additional filter. With a MODERATELY loaded trailer and your engine STOCK you can pull the fuel pressure down to 0 if you try, and empty with just 100hp dialed up I can bottom out the FP gauge quickly. I think any added restriction to this would exacerbate the problem.

If you're concerned with warranty - don't modify your vehicle. I highly doubt you will see any long term benefit with an additional 2 mic filter anyway. The stock stratapore filter is pretty good for OEM.

After reading about current fuel system issues (injector problems primarily) which apear to be common to all newer systems with high pressures at the injectors, I'm interested also. In fact my local dealer (Dave Smith) is going to install a Racor 660 2 micron filter on the truck this week. I can't see how better filtration could hurt since the majority of injector failures have been related to worn injectors or contaminated fuel.

This is exactly why I am doing the research on adding a 2 micron filter. My truck with less than 3K on it is already louder than it was when new and sounds like a gasser with spark knock. Louder at idle and a steady rattle while cruising. Before everyone gets on me about a noisy diesel I have owned and driven all sorts of diffrent diesels and I know what they are supposed to sound like. Diesels make noise I know. I bought the CTD because it was very quiet and I would like to keep it that way. It's not so loud it wakes the dead but I can hear it, and that's enough for me. Looking on this board and others and speaking to a couple of late CTD owners I have a concern about the longevity of the HP injection system and want to take every precaution to ensure it lives a long life. Anthony, please keep us updated on your install.

DCobb, I am relatively new to this fuel pressure issue. I picked up my new 05 Dodge at Carson Dodge yesterday. While there I spoke to John Holmes(writes articles in TDR mag) I asked him about this potential problem of hi pressure and 5- 10 micron particles sandblasting the internals of the diesel system

He said for me not to worry as Cummins did not recommend any advanced filtering system other that what is provided on the Dodge. John also said there were no problem with the Cummins in the Dodge. He cautioned me to not prefill the Fuel filter as that could cause non filtered fuel into system. This is from my memory and not a direct quote, But is close to what he said

Question Is a louder engine an indication of fuel system wear?
