Got a couple of questions... . I have a 03 Diesel Automatic 4X2 Long Bed Non Slip Rear End... . Does anyone know if i am required to put a special non slip oil in the rear end. i thought they had done away with that requirement... ..... No2,, if you are going along at say 60 mph and you want to coast down a long hill. . is it ok to slip the transmission up into neutral... . ?????

Slip in neutral? Why/ On Caddy and I bet other manufactures going into neutral at speed sets a SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT.

Check your local laws. In most places it not only illegal, it is dangerous. When going back in gear it can cause the rear end slide and possibly make you swap ends. We see it a couple times a year during the summer when the tourist come to town pulling their boats and campers.

First Thanks for the reply..... and the info..... I live in a place where you can coast for as much as a mile from time to time, Ive done it many times , but i don't put the trany into drive until i'm under 30 mph... i never hear or feel a thump or any sensation when i shift... We don't have any traffic problem or i wouldn't do it. i find my mileage indicator gives me up to a half mile more per gallon coasting... But More Inportantly, i wanted a transmission man to tell me if i was doing any damage to the transmission... years ago we use to do this and see how far we could DRIFT as they say in Virgina. ha... . We'd have contests... ... . doc

Do not slip the auto into neutral going down the road.

You dont need any friction modifier, but you can use oils that have the modifier in them already with no issue.

Thanks, J williams, Ill stop that practice of Coasting, I am wondering ,,, what is the danger of putting the transmission in Neutral????. What Could happen or would likely happen???JUST WHAT HAPPENS?????I'M JUST COURIOUS..... DOC... .

I think it's primarily the possibility you'll encounter a situation where you need to accelerate to avoid an incident, forget it's in neutral, hit the throttle and then without letting off slam it in. Chances are you wouldn't, but Joe Public is often inattentive. The real question is how much does it actually affect mileage vs how much it affects the overhead display. Even assuming it does give you an extra . 5mpg, over the course of about 35 gallons it works out to an extra 17. 5 miles per tank. Hardly worth the possible wear and possible safety issues from doing this.

You will have a good portion of the trans internals spinning without a lot of lubrication going on at idle(low pressure). Not a good idea over the long haul.
