I want to change the coolant in my '97, but for the life of me, I cannot find the radiator drain plug. Where is it located? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

They hide it pretty well.

It is on the drivers side up behind the bumper where you would expect to see a pet cock. It is black plastic and it you are laying under the PU with your head toward the back it will turn to the left and pull out to let it drain. I took a pair of pliers and turned gentlly and pulled. It is a PITA the first time. It is not a pet cock like on the old rads.

When I pulled the petcock out of my '97 radiator, the "O" ring tore and I had to replace it. Just something to beware of.

What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about?

I agree with some kind of lube on the "O" ring when re-installing it, but unfortunately, the one on my radiator tore when I pulled the petcock. Not much I could do about that. If it happened on mine, it may well happen on others when changing the coolant for the first time on their rig.

I got a replacement at my friendly local NAPA store from their "O" ring kit. I don't remember the size of the ring sadly enough.

I found it easier to pull the lower radiator hose. This method also drains coolant from the block and not just the radiator. I used the cummins complete variety of coolant.

If you get a length of 3/8" ID plastic tubing and attach it to the neck of the drain valve, you can route the used coolant directly into a jug for transport/disposal.

On my '96 reg. cab, when I replaced the coolant, the petcock leaked. Was told to replace the thing every time you change coolant. ($2. 95 at the dealer with O ring) No more problems. I believe in the KISS theory.
