Intercooler paint?

I looked through some posts, but nothing was answered for sure.

I just noticed my radiator's black paint is beginning to chip off in places. Is this something I should fix? And if so, what kind of paint?

[edit: I changed the title so the thread isn't misnamed... ]

Are you sure it's the radiator and not the intercooler that is flaking? My intercooler was replaced after I hit a deer and the new one is losing the paint like you're describing. The replacement was supposed to come from Dodge, but I doubt it now. I'll be repainting mine soon. My radiator is unpainted by the way.

Agh, yeah, intercooler.

I'm still learning the guts of this beast. :)

So, should I worry about paint coming off it?

I'm mildly concerned. I don't want the intercooler to pit and corrode through. I suggest that you carefully clean off the loose paint and repaint it.

I'd suggest repainting it BUT just put on a light coat. A heay coat could act like a heat barrier and reduce cooling efficiency. Any standard auto paint should do fine

I bought the Eastwood radiator paint. When I got it I read the directions and it stated to improve adhesion use a self etching primer - GREAT! I don't want layers of paint.

So, what I'm saying - use any good BLACK paint. Black because it has better heat transfer characteristics than other colors (I know - my truck is black).

Also - what was mentioned - only 1 coat - you don't want an insulator.

Make sure to clean it with something first (like laquer thinner or some sort of wax and grease remover. This will help it last longer and not have bare spots.

If you look at a new "02" none of the "behind the grill" stuff is painted. When I asked about it prior to buying new truck, dealer said DC was saving money by not painting the area. I am wondering, like you, if it really matters???? Any engineers out there that might have more than a guess?
