When i shut the truck off the radio stays on,and the relay in the dash fuse box clicks. Removing the relay dose not shut the radio off,but if you manually shut the radio off the relay stops clicking. What ever is going on drains the batteries so that it barley starts in the morn. this has been only occasionally till this radio thing?? Any one want to buy a 99 3500?? Thanks leo jr. #@$%!

Leo,

What type of radio / system do you have (e. g. : basic factory, factory w/Infinity premium speakers, aftermarket, etc. )?

What level of trim does the truck have (basic, high-line, premium w/heated seats)?

Do you have remote radio controls on the steering column?

Do you have a power antenna?

factory am/fm,cd,cassett player, no power seats or anttena, laramie slt. noticed that the cigerett lighter makes the rely start clicking to. Thanks leo

On my '98 12V, the relay (located forward/middle in the panel) is a spare, connected to nothing; it may have a function in your '99. One of the two circuit breakers (side-by-side, near the center) controls power to the power seats, which you don't have. The other controls power to the door locks and windows. The large combination relay (forward, bottom) controls turn signals and 4-way flashers.

If the radio stays on, I would first suspect the key switch, especially at its age. Remove the knee bolster (should be three screws at the bottom, then 'clips' at the top) and locate the connecter to the key switch and figure out how it disconnects. The next time it happens, disconnect the key switch. If it stops, you may have a faulty key switch. It sounds like the switch is not completely disconnecting the power and enough current is getting through to power the radio and almost power the relay.

It takes thought and patience, but I believe you can remove the key switch without removing the steering wheel. If so, disassemble it if possible; a good cleaning may solve the problem.

Thanks, that is the direction i was headed, but figured before i dove in, would not hurt to ask a question!( Old enough now that am not worried about learning from someone else's experience, should have got here sooner!!) Thanks again will let ya know what i find. leo

I noticed my radio will stay on some times for 3 to 5 seconds after I turn the key off; not all the time but one out of 20 events this happens. I wonder if my key switch is also going out or if there is some kind of capacitor that needs to dump it's power but pretty strange it just started in the past 4 months.

Switch checked out fine, but what i found was if the radio stays on, I hit the windshield wash and it gose off at least till the next run cycle, may be related to the malfuntioning intermintint wiper mode. Have not had time to tear into it yet???

Ghost in the machine

Ignition switches can cause some mighty strange problems. My wife's S10 Blazer recently (last week) needed an exorcist (and an ignition switch): You could turn it off and be walking away with the keys in your hand and suddenly the starter would begin cranking the engine. Then stop. Then crank some more. And keep that up until the battery cable was disconnected.

Your radio isn't playing Elvis or Michael Jackson songs by any chance, is it. . ? :-laf
