I installed a Borgeson steering shaft on my 92 W250 (5 spd transmission). While installing the shaft I noticed that the end of the steering shaft where the rag joint mounts is approximately 12. 5" from the firewall and on my 93 W250 (auto transmission) it is 10. 5" inches from the firewall. Anyway, the clearence between the inner fender and the rag joint is pretty tight on the 92.

Anybody know what the factory measurement should be?

Thanks,

C. D. Hunter

The shaft that goes thru the firewall is not in a fixed position. It will slide up into the steering column. The spring pushes the rag joint closer to the steering box. I pulled mine out recently in the process of installing a Flaming River shaft. I don't have many ideas on how to adjust where it rides (unless you want to cut the spring shorter). You could bend the inner fender out enough to make you feel comfortable with it? Hopefully someone else will chime in.

I replaced my stocker with a Borgeson dual u-joint, in the process the shaft was inadvertently pulled out. Somehow I was able to slide it back up in there & now have 5 1/2" sticking out of the main housing, I did cut off 3 or 4 rounds of the spring to get everything back in place.

DieselBuzz and TWorline - Thanks for the replies. Right now the spring does not have any compression on it... it is just floating on the shaft.

I will go back and unhook the rag joint and try to push the shaft in a litter further.

I already installed the Borgeson 940 and new rag joint. Perhaps when this one gets worn out I will replace it with the model the u-joints at both ends.

Hi, Where did you guys get the Borgeson steering shaft repair? I am helping a neighbor repair his '92 4X4 and the joint at the input of the steering box is shot. Not having seen one of these Borgeson shafts, does it replace this worn part? Any help much appreciated... (I am a second gen. owner)

In the cab if you look up over the brake pedal you can look into the grill like tube of the steering column. There you should be able to see where the two shafts slide together, about 5 inches from the firewall. I say give it a shot of your favorite solvent and try tapping/prying it some from the engine side. You may be able to get to slide up and in without taking it all a part again. Good luck with it.

does the one with 2 u joints the heavy duity one work on a 89 basicly how can I tell if the reg joint can be removed on my truck

IIRC there should be another roll-pin holding the upper 1/2 of the coupling to the shaft that connects to the steering wheel. FWIW - The shop manual stated something to the effectsof Do Not Hammer on the steering shaft assy as it may cause damage and the whole upper steering assy would need to be replaced.
