Warming up the Cummins?...

Does Cummins Co. ever visit this site?

This just in! First fill-up since timing change- went up from about 19 mpg to 20. 64 (with SOME hot-rodding on this tank!). Should be better yet when I calm down & start driving normally again. :)

If anything I would think that advancing the timing would aid in the cold start dept. If the fuel is being injected even later as the piston is coming up then it's not pre-igniting as early and fighting the moving piston's momentum... . (or am I still rocking in a gasser world??)

Matt - forever rocking in a diesel world.

Matt,

When you advance the timing the piston is lower on the upstroke this is why a Diesel starts harder the piston isn't at TDC when it fires, the reason for advancing a diesel is it doesn't have an automatic advancre like a gasser,so at higher rpm you lose power if you stay @ factory timing, don't forget that these engines were detuned for DC to save the drivetrains.

Ohhhh!!! Der... I was thinking about that backwards. I get it now.

Cummins detuned these 6BTA's for DC, but the setting for timing seems to be up to the person doing the adjustment. In some people's eyes there is a really high upper limit, while others stick to the lower #'s like 16 or 17. I guess it has to do with what you want to do with the engine... ...

So the timing stays the same throughout the entire RPM range (idle-full fuel)? I can see how starting it up would be a problem... . how about throttle response/lower RPM?

Matt - learning more about diesels by the day, thanks to the TDR.

Hey guys! Like I've said before I'm running 21 degree timing on my truck, and like they were saying it seems to run alot better up at top end of the rpm range, it really smooth running up at 2500 and above. My truck starts fine in the cold, here in Ohio it's getting a bit nippy. I'm about to put my Bra on the front of my truck that zips up for those nice cold morning starts. . hehe
