I checked the rectangular plastic tube that goes from the radiator core support to the air box and it appears that I might be able to put a 2nd one thru a hole "neatly cut" in the lower splash panel just below where the bottom of the grill is. They should match pretty good and I thought of maybe making a joint gasket out of an old bicycle inter- tube. I would then have "Ram Air" directly from the grill area to the airbox!

The only thing about getting "Ram air" from down low is the thought of sucking a pile of water in as well. One of my dads friends (in the days when the put 6. 2's in Blazers just after the disasterous 5. 7) did just that due to a design defect from GM. Water does not compress very well )^: and he ended up with a new short block.

SCOT: Hey thanks for the input. Didn't think of that but I'm hoping the K&N inside the air box will stop any water flow! And it's "uphill" from the intake to the airbox.

I'm thinking about putting a snorkle on mine. The snorkle would serve 2 purposes:

- Allow me to get stuck in really deep water.

- Let the engine breath the cleaner and probably cooler air up high. Notice how semi trucks pick air up way up high and most cab-overs have the air intake above the cab?

I just have to figure out a way to do this without making the truck too much uglier - the front bumper is yet to undergo a beautification project.

unclebilly: You know that is really a great idea. I wonder if I could proceed like I'm planning and add a vertical tube to pick-up air at about the same level as the top of the hood. Then I could ford rivers and such, or at least go thru deep water without dying. Probably have to make it air tight but I think it would work!!!

I'm looking at doing the "behind/below" bumper thing. Ive got some 3" tubing used for marine inboard fresh air vent systems. Also picked up a couple of marine chrome vent ducts that look like ram air inlets. Plan to mount the inlets just behind the bumper on passenger side. Also picked up a vent junction box that allows multiple 3" lines to connect. Will run the 3" ram air lines into it, then adapt the junction box to the factory air box. The last problem I had to resolve was how to get the 3" inlet lines from behind the bumper up into the engine compartment. That problem is going to be solved by following "Mel Fuelling's" advice ... use a piece of rubber exhaust hose. I need the flexibility to change the shape from round to rectangular when entering the engine compartment from below. Hopefully the thing'll fly like a rocket after this. 'Course, it might fall like a rock too!!!

That wire wound vent hose is very inefficient for sucking air through. I'd suggest using 3" PVC or ABS pipe as it is more rigid (heat it up to shape it) and exhibits better gas transport properties.
