Is anyone on here using a ram air style intake for their truck?

I am running stock air box and before I upgrade I was wondering how much more efficient, if at all, running some type of funnel under the front of the truck and ducted to the air box, getting colder, pressurized air, rather than hot, static air from the cowl?

Some type of home made system would be cool but I am not sure.

Check my readers rigs for complete pics of my homemade setup, I have had good luck with it and monitor my air temps at the intake horn and adjust to maintain 70*/ 90* at all times, in the colder months when the ambient temp gets below 40* I cannot maintain the temps I want but am working on more mods for warm up. I also believe this has helped my egt out some as well but the overall idea was for economy.

Cheers, Kevin

Thanks Whitmore, that is similar to what I was thinking. I think I will modify my stock box until I decided what type of BHAF I want. Probably something like yours. A conical style like the AFE Mega Cannon.

Very cool.

Steve, I have had this thing in place for almost a year and have found that if I can maintain my temp at the intake horn between 70 and 90 that my mpgs will run about 1 extra, I have gotten as high as 23. 4 mpg, I have a 38 mile one way trip to work that I can run very good comparisons and have found this to be very consistant. A few months ago I went to 19. 5 wheels that are 35. 2 inches tall and I need to start all over again on my comparisons, I have a 2000 mile trip planed to Texass soon so I will post some more results after then. Also I have added a couple hundred pounds of wheight to the rig and should be around 8500 lbs now, need to get back on the scales.

Cheers, Kevin

I run ram air in my truck. You can see my pics of the hood in my reader's rig album. Unfortunately I got it installed during my first tow which happened to be cross-country so I didnt get alot of comparison. Don't know if it helped mileage in the least but with the setup you see in my sig pulling an 18k trailer through the mountains of Idaho, Montana and down to NM the highest temp I ever saw was 1170F post turbo in 5th gear going up 4th of July pass at 50mph. Thought my gauge might be off but it's brand new(which doesnt always mean anything) and well respected brand I think. Also I wasnt running injector's and I think that is probably the biggest cause of high egt temps. Anyway that's my 2cents

1170* post turbo usually equates into at least & maybe more than 300* less than pre turbo--

1170* post = 1470* pre at the least---which = trouble if sustained for more than your basic 1/4 mile drag race--sure you can probably go longer, but is it worth it-----keep an eye on that guage or better yet move the thermocouple to pre turbo position---chris

Just got my ARB catalog, and while reading this thread I couldn't help but get this idea. How about using their Safari Snorkel intake system for a ram-air type intake? Would probably suck in less road grime and water, and it looks cool.

Ideas?

I can be a moron sometimes, especially in late evening and early morning. My egt's are taken pre turbo not post /smack. Sorry for confusion.
